Stevie Smith (1st car out) was second quick, followed by Travis Cram (10th), Bronson Maeschen (42nd), Dion Hindi (8th), Kenny Jacobs (22nd), Jason Meyers (48th), Terry McCarl (4th), Rob Chaney (5th) and Steve Kinser (13th). Kim Mock failed to get a time in and scratched. Heat one (started): 1. Brooke Tatnell 2w (6) 2. Joey Saldana 9E (8) 3. Seth Brahmer 13 (4) 4. McMahan 20 (10) / 5. Clint Garner 40 (3) 6. Justin Henderson D1 (7) 7. Brock Mayes 11B (5) 8. Garrett Ishii 71G (1) / 9. Jacobs 29 (9) 10. Mike Moore 69 (2) For sprint car fans, the heats on the qualifying night of the Nationals can be the most exciting races of the season, and tonight didn't disappoint. Tatnell got an outstanding jump and circled the two rows in front of him to take the lead on lap one of the 10 lapper. Saldana made a surge using the bottom of the track, chasing the leader who used the high side. McMahan improved his stock by gaining the final transfer from Garner with three to go. Jacobs spent the last two laps trying in vain to catch Ishii for at least a spot in the B. Heat two (started): 1. Lynton Jeffrey 12 (3) 2. Jeff Shepard z1 (6) 3. JD Johnson 98 (2) 4. Sam Hafertepe Jr. 15H (4) / 5. S. Smith 19s (10) 6. Kerry Madsen 11H (5) 7. Meyers 14 (9) 8. Jason Johnson 41 (8) / 9. Chad Hillier 5c (7) 10. Ray Allen Kulhanek 41K (1) Kulhanek led lap one, but Jeffrey quickly took command on the second circuit. Shepard was the man on the move, utilizing the low groove. S. Smith ran out of time in his quest for fourth, in a heat that sent four stout drivers to the B. Heat three (started): 1. Randy Martin 14m (4) 2. Wayne Johnson 14AJ (7) 3. Ed Lynch Jr. 2L (8) 4. Tony Bruce Jr. 18T (6) / 5. McCarl 24 (9) 6. Jesse Hockett 75J (2) 7. Cram 17G (10) 8. Robert Ballou 81x (1) / 9. Neil Shepherd 4N (5) 10. Josh Higday 2x (3) Martin led flag to flag circling the front row made up of two USAC regulars. On lap two, Shepherd came to a stop, bringing out the yellow. Martin led Hockett, Higday, Ballou and W. Johnson back to green flag racing. Higday's left side panel on the top wing blew off and lodged on Cram's hood. Higday was done, but Cram wen to the work area to have the piece removed, and restarted. W. Johnson stuck to the low side in picking off all but the leader. Lynch followed on the high side in strong fashion, while Bruce held off McCarl for the last transfer. Heat four (started): 1. Ben Gregg 22B (1) 2. Natalie Sather 94s (2) 3. Tim Kaeding 10K (4) 4. Don Droud Jr. 81 (5) / 5. Chaney 24H (7) 6. Maeschen 96 (9) 7. Tayler Malsam 26 (8) 8. Jack Dover 53 (6) / 9. Kaley Gharst 3 (3) DNS - Kim Mock 1m Sather jumped out to an early lead. On lap five, Gregg had a good run on the cushion to take over the point. A lap later, Gharst went up in smoke, ending his night. Gregg led Sather, Droud, Kaeding and Maeschen back to green flag racing. Kaeding was able to get by Droud for third after the restart. Heat five (started): 1. Greg Wilson w20 (2) 2. Brian Brown 21 (5) 3. Todd King 97 (1) 4. Kinser 11 (8) / 5. Jac Haudenschild 35 (4) 6. Calvin Landis 70 (6) 7. Nick Smith 15s (3) 8. Hindi 11D (9) / 9. Ricky Logan 10 (7) DNS - Eric Baldaccini B4 On the first try at green, N. Smith thought he had an angle to cut low into turn one, but caught the front nerf bar of Brown. Brown was spun slightly from the contact, and collected Logan who flipped and was done, and Kinser, who tipped over. Logan was done for the night, but Kinser returned. Wilson led the duration of the heat, but the action was further back, where Kinser and Haudenschild were fighting tooth and nail for the final transfer. At one point, it looked like Kinser would be stuffed into the backstretch wall, but with two to go he ducked under Haud coming out of two to take the final transfer spot for good. C main (started): 1. Jacobs (1) 2. Hillier (3) / 3. Higday (4) 4. Shepherd (2) 5. Moore (5) 6. Kulhanek (6) DNS - Logan, Gharst, Baldaccini, Mock Jacobs led flag to flag in the 8 lapper, pulling away by about 5 seconds. Hillier had plenty of room between himself and Higday, who passed Shepherd for third on the last lap. B main (started): 1. Cram (2) 2. S. Smith (1) 3. McCarl (6) 4. Hindi (4) / 5. J. Johnson (8) 6. Madsen (14) 7. Henderson (10) 8. Chaney (7) 9. Landis (11) 10. Maeschen (3) 11. Haudenschild (15) 12. Malsam (9) 13. Garner (17) 14. Dover (12) 15. Hillier (22) 16. Hockett (18) 17. K. Jacobs (21) 18. Ballou (20) 19. Ishii (19) 20. Mayes (13) 21. Meyers (5) 22. N. Smith (16) Cram sailed in the star-studded 12-lap B. McCarl was able to move into fourth on lap one, and won a steady battle with Hindi for third. J. Johnson made a late charge but fell short of the final transfer. Smith exited on lap five, and Meyers fell out on lap ten. A main (started): 1. Shepard (1) 2. Tatnell (2) 3. W. Johnson (4) 4. Saldana (6) 5. McMahan (8) 6. Kinser (7) 7. Droud Jr. (3) 8. Kaeding (14) 9. Bruce Jr. (9) 10. McCarl (23) 11. Hafertepe Jr. (12) 12. S. Smith (22) 13. Lynch Jr. (5) 14. Brown (10) 15. Hindi (24) 16. Martin (13) 17. Cram (21) 18. Wilson (17) 19. Brahmer (11) 20. Sather (19) 21. JD Johnson (18) 22. King (20) 23. Jeffrey (15) 24. Gregg (16) Tatnell jumped out to the early lead in the 25 lapper, followed by W. Johnson and Shepard. S. Smith survived a jumbled start at the rear of the field to emerge sixteenth after lap one. Shepard slowly gained on W. Johnson and gained the runner-up spot back at the halfway point. Meanwhile, Droud was running well in fourth. Saldana tried to track down Droud for 12 laps, but was denied until lap 16 or so, when he used the low side to fly by. Tatnell received some pressure from Shepard in heavy lapped traffic, but on lap 23 was able to put three lapped cars between himself and second place. Those cars were eliminated on lap 24, when Jeffrey came to a stop. Tatnell led Shepard, W. Johnson, Saldana, Droud and McMahan back to the green, white, checker finish. Shepard worked the bottom side of turns one and two to perfection on the restart, grabbing the lead and his second career Knoxville win. W. Johnson held off the charges of Saldana for a podium finish, while McMahan shot by Droud for a top five. McCarl was the hard-charger, moving forward 13 spots. |

Knoxville Nationals Night Two 55 cars Tim Shaffer (1st car out to time) set quick time at 15.000 seconds. Jason Martin (2nd car out) was second quick, followed by Mark Smith (9th), Toni Lutar (5th), Donny Schatz (54th), Randy Hannagan (15th), Lance Dewease (8th), Brian Paulus (11th), Brandon Wimmer (6th) and Craig Dollansky (19th). The track went away quickly, with early timers having a much larger advantage than night one, with the exception of Schatz. Fred Rahmer got upside down in hot laps, ending his night early. Robert Bell failed to get a time in. Heat one (started): 1. Chad Blonde 5B (2) 2. Dusty Zomer 1z (3) 3. Greg Hodnett 22 (4) 4. Lucas Wolfe 5w (7) / 5. Shaffer 6 (10) 6. Jan Howard 4xx (1) 7. Billy Alley 55 (6) 8. Randy Hannagan 1x (9) / 9. Dean Jacobs 7K (8) 10. Rager Phillips 9 (5) Blonde led flag to flag in the 10 lapper. The top three pulled away, as Howard held the final transfer to the A down ealry. Wolfe eventually dove under him as a part of a four-car battle with Shaffer and Alley. The four were within five car lengths for much of the heat. The top four finishers went to the A, next four to the B, and last two to the C. Heat two (started): 1. Jonathan Allard 0 (3) 2. Daryn Pittman 21x (2) 3. Jason Solwold R19 (6) 4. Bob Felmlee 6F (4) / 5. Dewease 25 (9) 6. Sean Michael 6N (8) 7. J. Martin 36 (10) 8. Matt Wasmund 4w (1) / 9. Brent Antill 1 (5) 10. Davey Heskin 56 (7) Allard circumvented the front row for an immediate lead he would never relinquish ahead of Pittman, who had an extremely disappointing qualifying run. Solwold was the man on the move, charging into third. Dewease and Michael did well to move into fifth and sixth. Heat three (started): 1. Bob Weuve 19 (1) 2. Jeremy Campbell 10c (4) 3. Danny Smith 4 (5) 4. Chad Kemenah 8K (6) / 5. Skip Jackson 2 (7) 6. M. Smith 55s (10) 7. Paulus 28 (9) 8. John Lambertz 12L (8) / 9. Larry Pinegar II 44 (3) 10. TJ Winegardner Jr. 11T (2) Weuve led flag to flag. Campbell and a persistent D. Smith swapped second several times in the waning laps in a good battle. Winegardner exited on lap four. Heat four (started): 1. Danny Lasoski 83 (6) 2. Jason Sides 7s (7) 3. Travis Rilat 29T (2) 4. Shane Stewart 1HD (8) / 5. Tony Shilling 47T (1) 6. Scott Winters R9 (3) 7. Lutar 4x (10) 8. Wimmer 7TW (9) / 9. Bob Bennett 3 (5) 10. Brian Carlson 18 (4) Rilat took the point early. Lasoski was in second on lap one and took the lead on lap three. Carlson went up in smoke on lap nine while running eighth. That alllowed Lutar and Wimmer a shot to make the B main. Sides used the restart to pass Rilat for second. Heat five (started): 1. Schatz 15 (10) 2. Jack Potter 15P (4) 3. Dollansky 7 (9) 4. Garry Lee Maier 11x (6) / 5. Mark Dobmeier 13L (7) 6. Jeff Mitrisin 47 (3) 7. Ryan Farrell 3s (5) 8. Chris Schmelzle 57c (1) / 9. Mike Deavers 72 (8) 10. TJ Stutts 39 (2) The initial start was a jumbled mess and the result was contact in turn one, between Stutts, who started in row one, and Dollansky, who was trying to make a run from the tail. Dollansky's crew made a number of repairs to return to action, while Stutts waited on the wrecker for what seemed an eternity before help arrived for him in the work area. Both made it out to restart. Potter rode the rim to lead early after inheriting the front row starting spot. Schatz was in second by lap two, but didn't pass the smooth racelong leader until white flag lap. Schatz and Dollansky became the only fifth row starters to finish in the top four of a heat on Friday. C main (started): 1. D. Jacobs (1) 2. Deavers (2) / 3. Pinegar (8) 4. Antill (5) 5. Heskin (3) 6. Rob Eyler 81c (10) 7. Ty Bartz 75 (7) 8. Bruce White 96au (9) 9. Phillips (4) 10. Bennett (6) DNS - Carlson, Winegardner, Stutts, Robert Bell 71, Fred Rahmer 51 D. Jacobs dominated the 10 lapper. Phillips trailed him most of the way, but spun on lap eight and took an easy tipover. That handed the second transfer to the B to Deavers. B main (started): 1. Shaffer (1) 2. Hannagan (5) 3. Wimmer (8) 4. J. Martin (2) / 5. Jackson (11) 6. Dobmeier (12) 7. Winters (15) 8. D. Jacobs (21) 9. Mitrisin (16) 10. Paulus (7) 11. M. Smith (3) 12. Alley (13) 13. Shilling (19) 14. Lutar (4) 15. Howard (17) 16. Farrell (14) 17. Lambertz (10) 18. Schmelzle (20) 19. Michael (9) 20. Wasmund (18) 21. Dewease (6) 22. Deavers (22) A 10 car melee greeted the start of the B main. A four-wide try at turn one wasn't going to work. Among the cars involved were Dewease, Deavers, Alley, Dobmeier, Schmelzle, D. Jacobs, Lambertz, and Jackson, who got upside down hard. Dewease also suffered some significant damage and didn't return. Deavers also went pitside, but Jackson was able to make it back out after significant repairs. Wimmer was black flagged under protest for jumping the start. M. Smith was cruising along on the next try at green, when he spun and tipped over in turn four. After repairing the top wing, he restarted at the tail. Shaffer shot out to an early lead, and one lap was in the books when Farrell slowed and Wasmund could not avoid hitting him and getting upside down. He was unhurt, but done. The restart saw Shaffer leading J. Martin, Hannagan, Paulus and Michael. Three more laps were in when Michael had a good run on Paulus on the backstretch, but was squeezed to the wall enough that contact between the two cars, flattened Michael's left rear tire. After a couple more green flag laps, Michael retired. Wimmer came back from his early black flag and was able to sail by Paulus for a transfer, and also passed J. Martin for third. Jackson made a late run for the final transfer, but fell just short after his first lap flip. A main (started): 1. Lasoski (1) 2. Schatz (8) 3. Solwold (3) 4. Kemenah (2) 5. Dollansky (7) 6. Pittman (18) 7. Wolfe (5) 8. Hodnett (11) 9. D. Smith (10) 10. Campbell (13) 11. Zomer (15) 12. Shaffer (21) 13. Wimmer (23) 14. Maier (9) 15. Rilat (19) 16. Hannagan (22) 17. Felmlee (12) 18. J. Martin (24) 19. Weuve (20) 20. Potter (14) 21. Blonde (17) 22. Stewart (6) 23. Sides (4) 24. Allard (16) Lasoski shot out early in the 25 lapper and never looked back in the non-stop event, lapping all but the top seven. Allard dropped out on the first lap. Meanwhile, there was some good racing behind him, as Solwold and Kemenah battled for second, and Stewart entered the battle for third with Kemenah, and later Schatz, who was moving forward. Stewart was in fourth on lap 21, when his powerplant went up in smoke. Sides dropped out of a top ten run on lap 19. Hannagan went up in smoke on lap 23 while running 12th. Pittman was the hard-charger, passing 12 cars. The win was Lasoski's 89th at Knoxville. World Challenge (started): 1. D. Jacobs (1) 2. Ricky Logan 10 (3) 3. Pittman (5) 4. Kerry Madsen 11H (4) 5. Schatz (11) 6. Brooke Tatnell 2w (6) 7. Dollansky (9) 8. Paul McMahan 20 (8) 9. Brian Brown 21 (7) 10. Lynton Jeffrey 12 (12) 11. Jackson (13) 12. Lutar (10) 13. Schmelzle (2) 14. White (14) 15. Farrell (15) 16. Stewart 11x (16) D. Jacobs ran a steady race to take home a cool $10,000. The track finally succombed to the ninety degree temperatures and wind as rubber formed about halfway through the 16 lapper. Logan found it early, but was unable to make much ground despite a lap 10 caution for Farrell who did a complete 360 under the flagstand. At the time, D. Jacobs led Logan, Madsen, Pittman and Tatnell. Pittman was able to duck under Madsen, while the restart allowed Schatz to outduel Tatnell for fifth. |

Toni Lutar 4x (19) Hannagan led the 22 lapper throughout, but there was plenty of action behind him. Stewart and Kemenah battled for second, with Kemenah holding down the spot early and Wimmer in fourth. That was the order on lap 16, when Lutar spun with rear-end problems and R. Martin and Chaney exited. Stewart was able to get under Kemenah with another lap complete and a Bruce stoppage slowing things again. On lap 18, Wimmer tried to pass Kemenah and crashed both cars out of a transfer with the ill-fated slidejob. Kaeding and Brown moved into the two final transfers, with Brown taking third on the restart. Good runs from Pittman (18th to 5th), Henderson (22nd to 6th) and Dewease (21st to 7th) fell just short. A main (started): 1. Donny Schatz 15 (1) 2. Joey Saldana 9E (8) 3. Terry McCarl 24 (6) 4. Craig Dollansky 7 (4) 5. Paul McMahan 20 (2) 6. Steve Kinser 11 (3) 7. Brooke Tatnell 2w (7) 8. Kaeding (24) Schatz shot out to the first lap lead in the 30 lapper. On lap two, Cram got sideways and Kaeding had nowhere to go, crashing hard. He was unhurt, but done. Cram returned. The red flag negated a pass for second by Dollansky and a pass for fourth by McCarl. The restart saw Schatz ahead of McMahan, Dollansky, Kinser and McCarl. Schatz pulled away agin until a lap 8 ignition problem for Stewart. That restart saw Schatz ahead of McMahan, McCarl who had slid in front of Dollansky for third, and Saldana. McCarl slid in front of McMahan on that restart, but couldn't run down Schatz who was entering lapped traffic on lap 13, when another slowdown occured when Cram hit the turn three wall. By that time, Saldana had taken third from McMahan. Only one more lap was in the books when the last stoppage came (an open red) for the flipping J. Martin. He was unhurt. Schatz had no peer on the restart as McCarl chased him in vain. Eventually, Saldana was able to move into second, while Dollansky moved by for third. McCarl came back on the final circuit to join the two-time winner and Saldana on the podium. Brown was the hard-charger, moving up 10 spots. The Best Dressed Crew was Chaney's followed by McMahan's and Bruce's. W. Johnson was named Mr. Southern Iowa Speedweek Sprintcar. |
