50th Anniversary Knoxville Nationals Night #1 50 cars Tim Shaffer (5th car out to time) set quick time at 15.372 seconds. Dave Blaney (6th car out) was second quick, followed by Jason Johnson (25th), Cale Conley (36th), Jason Meyers (45th), Randy Hannagan (3rd), Kerry Madsen (24th), Joey Saldana (9th), Erin Crocker (17th) and Jonathan Allard (21st). Heat one (started): 1. Mike Reinke 02 (3) 2. Lee Sowell 51s (2) 3. Trevor Green 4 (1) 4. David Gravel 89G (4) / 5. Shaffer 83 (8) 6. Hannagan 1x (7) 7. Fred Rahmer 51 (9) 8. Johnny Herrera 2w (5) / 9. Kraig Kinser 11K (6) 10. Colin Entwisle 2T (10) K. Kinser and Herrera came together to start the heat, with K. Kinser suffering heavy damage to his steering and the top wing. Repairs to the steering were made in the work area, and he restarted at the tail with a detiorating wing. Sowell led early in the 8-lapper. Races formed for the lead between Sowell and Reinke, and for the fourth and final transfer spot between Gravel and Shaffer. Reinke took the win with a last lap pass, and Shaffer took the fourth spot on the last lap before Gravel reclaimed it in a good race. Quick qualifiers not making the A through the heats were a trend, as nine of the top ten did not make a transfer spot. As in all Nationals, the first four finishers went to the A, the next four to the B, and the last two to the C. Heat two (started): 1. Max Dumesny 5V (2) 2. Lynton Jeffrey 12 (6) 3. Brandon Wimmer 7TW (4) 4. Craig Dollansky 7 (3) / 5. Madsen 3 (7) 6. Blaney 55x (8) 7. Lucas Wolfe 5w (5) 8. Kevin Ingle 2K (10) / 9. Chris Schmelzle 57c (9) 10. Bob Weuve 19 (1) Weuve jumped out to an early lead, but with two laps completed, jumped the cushion in three, and flipped wildly. He was unhurt. Dumesny assumed the lead ahead of Jeffrey, Wimmer, Dollansky and Madsen. That would be the way they would finish, with Madsen not able to get a faster car past Dollansky, who was effective in his blocking tactics. He would change the motor afterwards. Heat three (started): 1. Chad Kemenah 63 (4) 2. Austin McCarl 17A (3) 3. Shane Stewart 57 (6) 4. Gary Wright 9x (2) / 5. Johnson 41 (8) 6. Saldana 9 (7) 7. Zach Zimmerly 94 (5) 8. Ty Bartz 46 (10) / 9. Phillip Mock 1m (9) 10. Justin Henderson 35 (1) Henderson didn't take off at the outset and retired. Kemenah shot into the lead and led flag to flag. Johnson tried a desperate slide on Wright late, but didn't have position on the spot. Heat four (started): 1. Brad Sweet 49s (1) 2. Ed Lynch Jr. 2L (4) 3. Davey Heskin 56 (5) 4. Crocker 98 (7) / 5. Conley 3c (8) 6. Jordan Goldesberry 65 (9) 7. Domain Ramsay 20AU (2) 8. Bruce White 96AU (10) / 9. Don Droud Jr. 47 (6) 10. Jack Dover 53 (3) Sweet led lap one before a turn one mishap. Ramsay slowed entering one, with Droud getting into the back of him and collecting Dover. The latter two cars flipped and were done for the night. Conley was also caught up, but changed a top wing and right rear to return and run fifth. Heskin was running fourth on the restart and passed Ramsay for third. Crocker followed for the final transfer. Heat five (started): 1. Mark Dobmeier 13 (1) 2. Jason Sides 7s (6) 3. Bronson Maeschen 1 (4) 4. Tony Bruce Jr. 18 (2) / 5. Meyers 14 (8) 6. Allard 0 (7) 7. Jamie Veal 35AU (5) 8. Ben Gregg 2BG (3) / 9. Rob Kubli 19L (9) 10. Ron Krysl 20PK (10) Sides was the mover in this one, as Meyers challenged a couple times, but fell short of Bruce. C main (started): 1. K. Kinser (1) 2. Henderson (2) / 3. Schmelzle (3) 4. Kubli (5) 5. Mock (4) 6. Entwisle (6) 7. Krysl (7) DNS - Droud Jr., Dover, Weuve Henderson led the first two laps before K. Kinser took over. The lead pair dominated the 8-lapper. B main (started): 1. Shaffer (1) 2. Johnson (3) 3. Saldana (8) 4. Madsen (7) / 5. Wolfe (11) 6. Blaney (2) 7. Herrera (10) 8. Hannagan (6) 9. Rahmer (16) 10. Allard (9) 11. Conley (4) 12. Henderson (22) 13. Zimmerly (12) 14. K. Kinser (21) 15. Gregg (14) 16. Veal (13) 17. Goldesberry (17) 18. Bartz (19) 19. Ingle (18) DQ - Meyers (5) (Crossed 4th, Scales) 21. Ramsay (15) 22. White (20) With nine of the top ten qualifiers going for four spots, it was a wild 12 laps. A lead trio of Shaffer, Johnson, Meyers, Blaney and Saldana led the first half before Ramsay tipped it over in turn four. Saldana restarted well, passing Blaney and Meyers. Madsen also got by Blaney and set his sights on Meyers. The two dueled for the last transfer. When Madsen pulled beside on the low side with two to go, entering three, Meyers took the low line, cutting in front of Madsen and killing his momentum. The move gave him fourth. Madsen took exception to the move afterwards, and apparently affected, Meyers exited the track on the turn one pit entrance and nosed into his pit without going to the scale. He was disqualified, but given 20th place points (lead lap) instead of 22nd? A main (started): 1. Stewart (6) 2. Dollansky (12) 3. Kemenah (1) 4. Heskin (4) 5. Sides (5) 6. Wimmer (2) 7. Madsen (24) 8. Jeffrey (7) 9. Johnson (22) 10. Shaffer (21) 11. McCarl (13) 12. Sweet (19) 13. Saldana (23) 14. Wright (16) 15. Dobmeier (20) 16. Crocker (8) 17. Green (18) 18. Reinke (11) 19. Bruce Jr. (17) 20. Gravel (3) 21. Sowell (14) 22. Dumesny (15) 23. Lynch Jr. (9) 24. Maeschen (10) Wimmer nipped Kemenah at the line to lead lap one before a turn one incident slowed things in the 25-lapper. Gravel and Lynch, who were running sixth and seventh, contacted, causing severe damage to both. Maeschen was also collected in the mess. Only Gravel would return. Wimmer led Kemenah, Stewart, Heskin and Jeffrey back to green flag racing. Four laps later, Kemenah would use the low side to move by Wimmer to the point. Kemenah built a sizable advantage until entering traffic. Stewart had put Wimmer away and made up ground. On lap 21, Stewart roared by on the high side in heavy lapped traffic and went on to win his fourth career 410 feature at Knoxville. Dollansky took second from Kemenah on the white flag lap in a run from 12th. Madsen was the hard-charger, advancing 17 spots. |

50th Anniversary Knoxville Nationals Night #2 50 cars Steve Kinser (8th car out to time) set quick time at 15.239 seconds on a quickly drying racetrack. Danny Lasoski (19th car out) was second quick, followed by Greg Hodnett (6th), Daryn Pittman (1st), Brian Brown (25th), Dusty Zomer (3rd), Donny Schatz (27th), Ian Madsen (24th), Keith Bloom Jr. (4th) and Sammy Swindell (50th). Heat one (started): 1. Ricky Logan 10a (2) 2. Stevie Smith 1z (3) 3. Kinser 11 (8) 4. Clint Garner 40 (1) / 5. Scott Winters 23w (5) 6. Jonathan Cornell 28 (9) 7. Brent Antill 81 (4) 8. Zomer 91 (7) / 9. Matt Wasmund 4w (10) 10. Tim Kaeding 83JR (6) Logan shot out to an early lead in the 8-lapper. The top four finishers went to the A, next four to the B, and last two to the C. Smith and Garner battled over second, while Kinser moved up nicely into the top four. On lap seven, Wasmund came to a stop, bringing out the caution. Logan led Smith, Garner, Kinser and Winters back to green. Kaeding would exit with motor issues the next lap. Kinser powered by Garner on the restart to claim third. Heat two (started): 1. Dale Blaney 2B (6) 2. Schatz 15 (7) 3. Dean Jacobs 97x (2) 4. Chad Meyer 4H (5) / 5. Jim Moughan Jr. 1mx (1) 6. Toni Lutar 4x (4) 7. Brooke Tatnell 59 (3) 8. Greg Nikitenko 6N (10) / 9. Chris Shirek 1K (9) 10. Lasoski 6 (8) D. Jacobs led early. Lasoski was moving up, but came to a stop with motor issues with two laps in the books. The restart saw D. Jacobs ahead of Blaney, Schatz, Tatnell and Moughan. Blaney passed D. Jacobs on the restart for the lead, while Moughan moved around Tatnell using the cushion to take the last transfer spot. Meyer was on the move as well, circling Tatnell and then getting by Moughan for fourth while coming to the white flag. Schatz worked his way up well too. Heat three (started): 1. Lance Dewease 30c (3) 2. Hodnett 22 (8) 3. Rager Phillips 10 (1) 4. Skip Jackson 2 (6) / 5. Robby Wolfgang 7K (2) 6. Madsen 55 (7) 7. Kaley Gharst 44G (5) 8. Mitchell Dumesny 77AU (4) / 9. Lee Jacobs 24H (10) 10. Jared Ridge 12x (9) Phillips took off in the lead with Dewease in pursuit. The pair exchanged the lead several times. Dewease on lap three, Phillips on lap four, and Dewease took it back for good on lap five. Hodnett was the man on the move, and Jackson won the last spot from Wolfgang in a good race. Heat four (started): 1. Jac Haudenschild R19 (4) 2. Pittman 13x (8) 3. Mark Shirshekan 3x (1) 4. Mike Moore 69 (3) / 5. Bloom Jr. 27 (7) 6. Todd King 97 (10) 7. Paul Jeffrey 12AU (2) 8. Paul McMahan 91x (6) / 9. Sam Hafertepe Jr. 15H (5) 10. Greg Wilson w20 (9) Before a lap could be completed, Hafertepe Jr. spun in turn two and collected Wilson. Wilson was done, but Hafertepe went to the welder and made repairs for the C. Haudenschild led early, while McMahan moved up nicely into the top four. Disaster would strike McMahan on lap four when his right rear tire came apart and he flipped wildly in turn four. He was uninjured as the crew went to work rebuilding for the B. The wreck was reminiscent of Bob Weuve the night before when he had something break in turn three. The restart saw Haud leading Shirshekan, PIttman, Moore and Bloom Jr. Pittman slid under Shirshekan to secure second after the green fell. Heat five (started): 1. Swindell 1s (7) 2. Luke Hall 34 (1) 3. Brown 21 (8) 4. Seth Brahmer 13v (3) / 5. Josh Schneiderman 49 (5) 6. Tyler Walker 17 (6) 7. Dustin Morgan 93 (9) 8. Austen Wheatley 44w (4) / 9. Bill Rose 6x (2) 10. Kim Mock 23 (10) Hall set the early pace, while Swindell and Brown started moving forward. A lone caution came out with eight in the books when Nikitenko stopped. The restart saw Hall ahead of Swindell, Brown, Brahmer, Schneiderman and Walker. Swindell took the lead and led the last two laps after the restart. C main (started): 1. Lasoski (1) 2. Kaeding (2) / 3. Hafertepe Jr. (3) 4. L. Jacobs (7) 5. Shirek (5) 6. Rose (4) 7. Ridge (6) 8. Wasmund (8) 9. Mock (9) DNS - Wilson Lasoski led the first two laps before a Wasmund spin slowed things. He checked out after the restart in the 8-lapper. Kaeding and Hafertepe Jr. went back and forth for second and final transfer before Kaeding took command. B main (started): 1. Madsen (2) 2. McMahan (4) 3. Zomer (1) 4. Schneiderman (8) / 5. Walker (5) 6. Kaeding (22) 7. Winters (6) 8. Tatnell (13) 9. Cornell (17) 10. Mi. Dumesny (11) 11. Bloom Jr. (3) 12. Lasoski (21) 13. Gharst (7) 14. Lutar (10) 15. Antill (9) 16. Morgan (18) 17. Wheatley (12) 18. King (20) 19. Wolfgang (14) 20. Moughan (16) 21. Nikitenko (19) 22. P. Jeffrey (15) Zomer shot out to the early lead in the 12-lapper from the pole. Madsen took second, while McMahan rode third ahead of Schneiderman and Bloom Jr. A Wolfgang spin on lap eight closed things up, and Madsen shot under Zomer for the lead. McMahan followed suit. The real race was for the final transfer. Schneiderman and Walker traded the spot until the last corner. Schneiderman rode the cushion to the position, after a failed attempt was made across the track by Walker. Contact was made by the two in the side-by-side battle for the spot. A main (started): 1. Swindell (3) 2. Brown (5) 3. Jackson (1) 4. Smith (11) 5. Schatz (4) 6. Blaney (2) 7. McMahan (22) 8. Zomer (21) 9. Hodnett (7) 10. Pittman (6) 11. S. Kinser (8) 12. Haudenschild (10) 13. Schneiderman (23) 14. Dewease (12) 15. D. Jacobs (16) 16. Logan (15) 17. Phillips (18) 18. Garner (17) 19. Brahmer (14) 20. Meyer (9) 21. Shirshekan (19) 22. Moore (13) 23. Hall (20) DNS - Madsen Three tries were needed to get the A main rolling. Shirshekan spun on the first try, and Hall flipped into the turn one fence. No one was hurt. Madsen was credited with 24th for point purposes after motor trouble following the B. Swindell took the early lead from Jackson in the 25-lapper. Action was instense, as Schatz quickly moved into third and then second behind Swindell in traffic. Jackson held down a steady third, while Brown was moving his way into the top five. Another charger was Smith, who had moved up from row six to fifth. The race went non-stop for 24 3/4 laps, when Moore came to a halt. Swindell led Schatz, Jackson, Brown and Smith back to green. Smith was able to get by Brown for fourth, before Moore spun on another white flag lap. Schatz had a right rear tire in second that was noticeably flat. It cost him on the last restart as Jackson zoomed by him, and Brown circled both Smith and Jackson to move into second at the finish. Jackson gave the locals two cars on the podium. The win was Sammy's 45th 410 win at Knoxville and worth $12,000. McMahan was the hard-charger, moving up 15 spots. |

McMahan tucked into second, with Haudenschild and Schneiderman behind him. Schneiderman was cruising on the low side and passed Haudenschild for third. Dollansky came along late in the going to claim the fourth and final transfer. Dave Blaney ended his Nationals on lap seven. It was the first time in 16 tries that he has not made the Nationals A main. Sweet needed a caution, but setttled for a 19th to 6th run. Gravel was named Rookie of the Nationals as the highest finishing Rookie. A main (started): 1. Tim Shaffer 83 (7) 2. Donny Schatz 15 (4) 3. Shane Stewart 57 (8) 4. Dollansky (24) 5. Brown snuck outside Sammy down the frontstretch but was shut down on lap four. Saldana's motor went up in smoke on lap eight and brought a caution. The restart order was Swindell, Brown, Schatz, Shaffer and S. Kinser. The next 17 laps went green until the mandatory red on lap 25. Schatz took a slide at Swindell late for the lead but hit the break in second. Teams were given five minutes to change anything on the car. The restart saw Swindell ahead of Schatz, S. Kinser, Shaffer and Brown. Brown worked his way past Shaffer and S. Kinser retired with engine woes, but Brown blew a right rear tire on lap 34, and had to restart at the tail after making repairs. Schatz had taken a slider at Sammy, but was headed off. The lap 34 restart saw Swindell leading Schatz, Shaffer, Stewart and Dollansky, up from 24th. Once green again, Schatz and Sammy put on a clinic. Schatz took a couple of shots at the leader. He led lap 45, before Sammy came back in front to take 46. One lap later, Swindell's left rear tire would give way and he got upside down. The restart with three laps to go saw Schatz leading Shaffer, Stewart, Dollansky and Madsen. On lap 48, Shaffer slid in front of Schatz in turn four, but Schatz recovered to lead the lap. The next time around, Shaffer would get the job done and lead the last two laps for $150,000. The win was Shaffer's third career victory at Knoxville. Dollansky earned hard-charger honors and the clock, while Heskin was the highest finishing Knoxville regular. Before the races, Jason Meyers' crew was awarded "Best Appearing". Jason Johnson's group was second ahead of Daryn Pittman's. Swindell was awarded with the "Jesse Hockett Mr. Sprintcar Title". |
