Gravel Coasts to Victory in Knoxville Opener

Bryan Hulbert / Bill Wright - KNOXVILLE, Ia. (August 7, 2013) The 53rd running of the FVP Knoxville Nationals kicked off with David Gravel picking up his first Knoxville Raceway triumph on Racingjunk.com qualifying night, crossing under the double checkered flags by 0.929 seconds as the fuel cell ran dry.

Starting his night timing eleventh quick, the FMR Racing No.6 coasted across the line for third in Heat one with an expired engine.

"I was nervous there. That was our best motor we blew up and this was our little motor," commented Gravel.

"With the track slicking off like this, you know it was just perfect.  It ran awesome but with about four to go, it started stumbling and man, I just got past the finish line. I had no fuel left at all, and I was scared to make weight; but we made weight.  It was a stressful night; a very, very, stressful night."

Working on early leader Greg Hodnett following a caution for Johnny Herrera, the Wright Process Systems No. 6 shot to the cushion to complete the pass on Lap three exiting turn four.

Restarting following a caution on lap seven, Gravel pulled a ten car length advantage on Hodnett with Josh Schneiderman going after the Eagle Steel No. 39, but ultimately surrendered third to Brad Sweet before the caution flew again on Lap nine for the No. 18 of Ian Madsen.

Taking the green with 16 laps to go, Sweet jumped to the runner up spot as Josh Schneiderman’s night came to a close, while running fourth, with a broken rear-end assembly.

Underway for the final time, Gravel went uncontested to the finish. Brad Sweet crossed second, with Tim Kaeding coming from twelfth to complete the podium. Greg Hodnett crossed fourth with Daryn Pittman earning the hard charger of the night, coming from twenty-fourth to complete the top five.

Shane Stewart settled for sixth with Justin Henderson seventh.  Paul McMahan crossed eighth followed by B-Feature winner Jason Sides. Defending FVP Knoxville Nationals Champion, Donny Schatz, completed the top ten after finishing third in the B-Feature.

Shane Stewart and Justin Henderson are currently tied in the points after the opening night of the FVP Knoxville Nationals with 481. Brad Sweet (480), Paul McMahan (477), David Gravel (474) complete the top five.

The 53rd FVP Knoxville Nationals continues on Thursday, August 8 with Hot Laps scheduled for 7:15 P.M. (CDT). News and information can be found at http://www.knoxvilleraceway.com.

Brian Brown Tops Casey’s Qualifying Night at Knoxville

Bryan Hulbert / Bill Wright - KNOXVILLE, Ia. (August 8, 2013) It didn’t take Brian Brown long to get to the front of the field in Friday’s Casey’s General Stores qualifying night feature, as the Casey’s/FVP No. 21 shot to the point exiting low in turn two on Roger Crockett on a Lap 2 restart.

"Man I’m so happy," said an elated Brian Brown in Knoxville Victory Lane. "I was so nervous going into tonight. I didn’t want to let all those people down that thought we were supposed to be up here down."

Pulling Kerry Madsen into the runner up spot, the duo began dicing for the lead as the caution displayed on Lap 3.

At speed, Madsen put the Keneric Racing No. 29 to the cushion with Brown able to throw the block. Battling back after falling back to fifth, second starting Scott Winters pulled to third on Lap 4 while Brown opened his advantage to 1.332 seconds.

Slowing again on Lap 8 for the stalled No. 4A of Jon Agan, the restart saw Brown work the hub with Madsen again railing the cushion. Producing a run down the back straight, Madsen dove for the lead through turns three and four; sliding across the nose of Brown’s No. 21. Giving the Grain Valley, Mo. shoe just enough room to drive across the racing surface, Brown reclaimed the lead at the line.

Closing on slower traffic on Lap 15, the advantage stood at 0.742 seconds with traffic allowing Madsen to make up four-tenths by Lap 19 as the pair began pulling slide jobs on the back markers in a high speed game of cat and mouse.

Pulling as close as two-tenths on Brown, traffic would finally clear with two laps to run, giving Brian Brown enough room to pull to a 0.812 second advantage at the checkered flag, putting the FVP No. 21 outside the  front row of Saturday’s 50 lap feature event, next to Joey Saldana who place fifth in the night’s feature event.

Kerry Madsen held onto second and earned the eighth starting spot in Saturday’s feature event. "Obviously disappointed to not get the job done there, but the reality is, I should have good points for Saturday night, and it’s a far cry from where we were at this point," commented Madsen on his runner up finish.

Kevin Swindell came from sixth to complete the podium; his fifth in as many starts in the Southern Iowa Speedweek. "I really thought I was going to steal one from them in traffic ‘cause I was the only one down on the bottom that was kinda rolling good. Just slipped there once, but we’ve run five nights with five podiums, and a win, so I’m excited to be locked into this deal and go in with a little momentum."

Swindell will roll from the ninth starting spot in Saturday’s FVP Knoxville Nationals championship feature.

Roger Crockett held on to fourth with the night’s quick timer, Joey Saldana, advancing from eighth. Coming from the B-Feature, Cody Darrah clawed from twenty-second to sixth. After moving back into the top three early on, Scott Winters faded to seventh with Craig Dollansky, Terry McCarl, and Stevie Smith completing the top ten.

Friday’s program will again provide drivers a chance to race into Saturday’s feature event, giving the top four in Friday’s A-Main a chance at rows nine and ten in Saturday’s 50 lap feature event.

Hot Laps Friday, August 9 are scheduled to begin at 7:15 P.M. (CDT). For news, updates, and further information, log onto http://www.knoxvilleraceway.com

Kyle Larson Hustles into Knoxville Victory Lane

Bryan Hulbert / Bill Wright - KNOXVILLE, Ia. (August 9, 2013) Drama abounded at the Knoxville Raceway Friday night as Kyle Larson raced to victory on National Speed Sport News qualifying night aboard the Abreu Vineyards No. 1KL, earning the seventeenth starting spot in Saturday’s $150,000 to win FVP Knoxville Nationals championship feature.

The 25 lap A-Feature began with a bang of sorts, as James McFadden spun across the track after tagging the back of Logan Schuchart entering turn one, collecting Austin McCarl, Robby Wolfgang, Tim Shaffer, and Rager Phillips. All drivers emerged unscathed.

Crossing 5.054 seconds ahead of Cap Henry, a caution with eight laps remaining allowed Larson to build his advantage as leaders were graced with a clear racetrack.

"I struggle in lapped traffic," admitted Larson after his second career Knoxville victory. "I was really good in clean air, but once I got into dirty air I was pretty tight, and worried. I didn’t know how close second place was. Thankfully that yellow came out because I didn’t think I was ever going to get by that No. 49 car. From there I had clean air, and that was the key to winning."

Cap Henry crossed second to earn his first career FVP Knoxville Nationals start as slower traffic racing with the leaders played to the advantage of the Champion Brands No. 54 on Lap 14, allowing Henry to work past Chad Kemenah.

"Me and A.J.  are pretty good at making our cars really tight, and going where other people won’t and it showed tonight," commented Henry on his finish. "I’m pretty excited. My goal was to run in the "B" so I guess we just skipped that and made the "A" Main."

Kemenah ended up third with Jac Haudenschild taking the final spot into Saturday’s Feature event. Each of the top four finishers earned a $4,000 check for their finish.

Brandon Wimmer completed the top five with Jason Johnson sixth. Wayne Johnson, who transferred out of the first "B" Feature, clawed from twenty-first to seventh. Randy Hannagan, Jeff Swindell, and Davey Heskin completed the top ten.

Going back to the first B-Feature, Sammy Swindell crossed under the checkered flag with the car running out of fuel. Barely holding the transfer spot, the scales would deliver the final blow to Swindell’s night as the Platinum Edition No. 1 crossed light; putting Danny Dietrich in the show and placing Swindell in the "E" Feature on Saturday.

The second consolation feature saw R.J. Johnson lead until the final lap, only to cross fourth after contact with the wall cost the Tampa, Florida native dearly. Tim Shaffer, Austin McCarl, and Don Droud, Jr. moved on.

The National Speed Sport News World Challenge went to Australia’s Brooke Tatnell. Chasing down Jason Johnson from the start, slower traffic brought the opportunity Tatnell needed; getting the slide job on Johnson on the sixteenth circuit to earn the $10,000 bounty.

"I was asked at the Queen’s Pageant the other night what we thought our chances were and I said, we had a better chance of winning the Queen’s Pageant than winning the Nationals. Somehow we just got prettier overnight," quipped the jubilant Brooke Tatnell.

Asked if he would take the "golden ticket" into Saturday’s feature event, Tatnell replied, "Can I have no seconds to think about it? I’m taking it baby. I’m taking it to the big dance."

Tim Kaeding worked to second on Lap 21 followed quickly by Daryn Pittman. Jason Johnson settled for fourth with Donny Schatz rebounding to fifth after falling as far back as eighth.

The 53rd running of the FVP Knoxville Nationals concludes Saturday, August 10 with Hot Laps starting at 7:15 P.M. (CDT). The night will begin with the "E" Feature. Each consolation feature will take the top four drivers further up the ladder.

With Brooke Tatnell taking the #55 into Saturday’s 50 lap feature event, 25 drivers will now start the biggest Sprint Car race in the world for the first time ever.

Schatz is Incredible in Seventh Nationals Title in Eight Years

Bryan Hulbert / Bill Wright KNOXVILLE, Ia. (August 10, 2013) Cash on your birthday is always great, but even better is earning your seventh FVP Knoxville Nationals title and a $150,000 bounty as Donny Schatz raced from the twenty-first starting spot to make history as the deepest starting winner in Nationals history; a record that had stood since 1962 when Jerry Richert accomplished the feat.  It was matched by Steve Kinser in 1995.

Talking about his mindset prior to the night’s feature event, Schatz was questioned on whether or not he had any doubt he could win, "I didn’t call if doubt, I called it motivation. This race team is unbelievable. I told these guys if we weren’t in the top five on that stoppage, we were going to be in trouble. I did not expect the track to get abrasive and take rubber like that."

Taking the lead on Lap 41, the North Dakota native worked to 4.093 second advantage at the checkered flag.

"Man to get through there; I don’t know what the hell else anyone wants me to do," said Schatz whose win defied the odds. "I guess I’m just going to keep doing what I do. That was a lot of fun to be able to start that far back and get up there. I know if it’s that much fun for me, it’s got to be that much fun for everyone here."

Jumping to the lead from the onset, Brian Brown immediately jumped to a 1.321 second advantage before the first caution on Lap 2 for the spun No. 4 of Cody Darrah.

After a caution on Lap 4, Brown again starting pulling to a huge advantage, pulling away for a 3.602 second lead by Lap 11. Having cracked the top 10 by Lap 5, Schatz continued to quietly march to the front, pulling to fifth on Lap 20.

The night’s competition red flew on Lap 24 with Brown leading over Joey Saldana, Justin Henderson, Kevin Swindell, and Donny Schatz making up the top five.

Working to third on Lap 29 with the track starting to take rubber, the STP No. 15 grabbed second on Lap 32. From there, it was a matter of chasing down Brian Brown who ran amongst the back markers. Almost two seconds behind at Lap 33, Schatz closed to under a half second by Lap 40, taking the lead the following lap, and going uncontested to the finish.

Brian Brown settled for the runner up spot for the second year running. In victory lane, the Missouri shoe talked about what happened in the second session, "I just got out there a little too early on that second set. Just hats off to Donny.   There’s a reason he’s a seven time champion. Congratulations to his team. "

Earning his best career finish in the FVP Knoxville Nationals, Justin Henderson completed the podium, only jumping in the American Fabrication No. 1D just over a month ago, "If it wasn’t for Schatz I think, we were close to having something for Brian at the end, but we had a hole in the tire. I was working as hard as I could to keep it up, but if I wouldn’t have pounded the wall trying pass Joey we may have had something, but, it is what it is. We’ll come back next year and try again."
