Finally! Brian Brown wins the Arnold Motor Supply Knoxville 360 Nationals!

by Bryan Hulbert/Bill Wright

KNOXVILLE RACEWAY, Knoxville, IA, August 2, 2014 – A loud scream of satisfaction echoed across the grounds of the Knoxville Raceway as Brian Brown finally marked the Arnold Motor Supply 360 Knoxville Nationals off his bucket list in his fifteenth attempt at the $10,000 to win event.

Brown's fifteenth 360cid Sprint Car victory at the Knoxville Raceway, the FVP No. 21 led start-to-finish in the 25 lap championship event.

"Man this feels good. I'm just thankful for everybody on this team," said Brown. "I'm almost out of breath, but this one's pretty cool."

Asked about having to change his line through traffic, Brown replied, "The car felt good up there the whole feature. Believe or not, I didn't want to lap anybody. I just didn't want to get off it. That Impact Signs, Awnings, and Wraps Scoreboard was pretty handy. I saw where Sam [Hafertepe] got by Sammy [Swindell] but didn't know where he was running once he got up there but here we are."

Leading by over two seconds at the first caution on Lap 7 for Kevin Swindell, Brown opened up his advantage again as Joe Beaver and Sammy Swindell swapped the runner-up spot.

Slow again on Lap 9 for the spun No. 82 Bronson Maeschen, the restart saw Sam Hafertepe, Jr. taking third and going to work on Swindell for second. Taking the spot on Lap 11, Hafertepe was never able to make up the two second disadvantage and Brown streaked through lapped traffic for the win.

Bettering his 2011 finish of eleventh, Hafertepe felt good about his performance in the 360 Nationals, "We had an awesome car there but I really, would have liked a caution there at the end just to see if we could have done anything with him," said Hafertepe. "I don't think many people knew we were running the bottom of three and four and that's where we were really making up a lot of time. I just felt like if I could have had a shot at him....not sure I could have passed him....but would have liked the opportunity."

Sammy Swindell posted his second podium of the weekend with a third place finish; holding off Davey Heskin in the closing laps, who ended up losing an engine.

"Our car was just too tight for that curb out there," commented Swindell. "I messed up a couple times. One time I got the right-front wheel up over it and that really slowed me down so I ended up letting Sam get through there, and let Davey catch up so I just backed it down to where I could make consistent laps."

Mark Dobmeier came from tenth to grab fourth with Tim Shaffer taking fifth after starting fourteenth.

Jason Johnson ran up as high as fourth but ended up crossing sixth. Joe Beaver slipped from the front row to finish seventh. Terry McCarl stormed from twentieth to eighth to earn the title of Hard Charger with Jonathan Cornell ninth. Danny Lasoski clawed from twenty-first to finish tenth.

The night's E-Feature was won by Tyler Drueke. D-Feature honors went to Johnny Herrera with Dustin Selvage taking the C-Feature win. Danny Lasoski took the win in the B-Feature. Jac Haudenschild moved through the most features in the Alphabet, coming from the E-Main to the C-Main where he finished fifteenth.

The highest finishing Rookie was Bill Balog who placed eleventh in the B-Feature.

Kline Grabs Second 305 Feature!

Rookie Devin Kline grabbed his second 305 feature of his career and the year here at the Knoxville Raceway. Corey Kautz got the feature off to a bumpy start after flipping in turn one when the green flag fell. He was uninjured.

Matthew Stelzer led Kevin Hetrick and Mike Mayberry early on in the 15-lap event. Stacey Alexander was on the move, however, moving into third on lap two and into the runner-up spot a circuit later.

By lap five, Alexander had ridden the cushion by Stelzer to take the lead. When Steve Breazeale spun on lap ten, Alexander led Stelzer, J Kinder, Kline and Kevin Hetrick.

Kline used the restart to his advantage, disposing of both Kinder and Stelzer to move into second. He would take the lead on lap twelve, and hold off Alexander on a lap 12 restart to win. The caution came for Stelzer, who went up in smoke.

Alexander followed Kline to the line. Kinder held the show position, ahead of Hetrick and Michael Philben. McKenna Haase, Breazeale, Jeff Wilke, Keoni Texeira and Kade Higday rounded out the top ten. Kline set quick time on the night, while Kinder, Mayberry and Texeira claimed heat races.

"These last two weeks, after winning the first one…it’s been a dream," said Kline in Victory Lane. "It’s just awesome. This win is for my uncle Todd, who passed away a couple months ago. Tonight is his birthday. I was just going to go where they weren’t. The car was perfect. The guys did great with it. I have the easy job."

Heskin Holds on for 360 Nationals Prelim Victory!

by Bryan Hulbert/Bill Wright

KNOXVILLE RACEWAY, Knoxville, IA, July 31, 2014 – After several small rain delays, the 24th annual Arnold Motor Supply 360 Knoxville Nationals kicked off Thursday night with Davey Heskin taking his first 360cid Sprint Car victory at the Knoxville Raceway over the hard charging Jason Johnson.

"It was a fast track tonight, we were just balls to the wall out there," said a nearly breathless Davey Heskin in Victory Lane. "We've had a mediocre season so far. I feel like so to park it here…even on a prelim night…it's really special."Jumping to the lead on the start, Heskin found the tail of the field on Lap 8.

Moving to second on Lap 6, traffic allowed Jason Johnson to close the gap on Heskin. Traffic would play into the hands of the Minnesota veteran, as all roads to the No. 56 were blocked before the caution waved on Lap 11 for the stalled No. 29 of Russ Hall.

Having to play out the restart twice due to debris, Johnson stayed close to challenge for the lead but would slowly watch the Deluxe Crates No. 56 begin to pull away.

Working again amongst the back markers in the closing laps, Jason Johnson would seize the opportunity to strike. Taking the white flag, the Stenhouse, Jr. Racing / Curb Agajanian Performance Group No. 41 made the bid for the lead, but would come up short as Davey Heskin grabbed the win.

"I needed lapped traffic for sure," commented second finishing Jason Johnson. "He left the door open for me on the white flag lap; but the driver missed the line."

Tony Bruce, Jr. rebounded to finish third after a test run this past Saturday night that resulted in a fifteenth place finish. Current Knoxville Raceway 360cid Sprint Car point's leader, Joe Beaver, finished fourth from eighth with Lee Grosz crossing fifth.

Casey Friedrichsen stated on the pole but slipped to finish sixth. Jamie Ball came from tenth to seventh with Kevin Swindell from twelfth to eighth. Brady Bacon crossed ninth with Dustin Selvage from nineteenth to finish tenth as the night's Hard Charger.

Thursday night's opener had 47 drivers draw in. Five Heat Races saw Kevin Swindell, Randi Miller, Jason Johnson, Cole Wood, and Ryan Roberts earning wins. The night's C-Main was scrapped and remaining drivers moved to the B-Main with Nate Van Haaften winning.

Qualifying saw Joe Beaver fastest at 15.906 seconds. Beaver also emerged as the top point getter with 491 points. He was followed by Bruce (476), Johnson (474), Heskin (471) and Grosz (467).

Night two of the 24th Arnold Motor Supply 360 Nationals begins at 7:15 P.M. (CST) with Qualifying on Friday, August 1. For continued updates and results from the Arnold Motor Supply log onto http://www.ascsracing.com and http://www.knoxvilleraceway.com.

Sammy Swindell Swings Into Knoxville Victory Lane!

by Bryan Hulbert/Bill Wright

KNOXVILLE RACEWAY, Knoxville, IA, August 1, 2014 – For the fourth time in his career, Sammy Swindell visited Victory Lane in 360cid competition at the Knoxville Raceway; winning night two of the 24th annual Arnold Motor Supply 360 Knoxville Nationals with a borrowed Al Parker Racing Engine under the hood.

Challenged in the closing laps by the Sioux Falls Ford No. 13, Mark Dobmeier ran the cushion to pull even with Swindell.

"When you're out front, you don't really know," said Swindell of the race for the lead. "They said Brown was running the bottom pretty good and I made some good runs there but I was just kind of conserving my tires there early and watching Dobmeier so as long as I could keep pace with him, I wasn't too worried."

Chasing Dobmeier the first eight rounds, Swindell shot from fourth to the runner up spot on the second lap. Working the low groove on the Knoxville Raceway, Swindell took the lead on the ninth round; following a restart after Alan Ambers and Jack Dover made hard contact in turns one and two. Ambers was taken to the hospital for observation, Dover was unharmed.

Slowed for the final time with six laps to run, Dobmeier stayed committed to the cushion with the battle side by side going into the final two laps, but giving Swindell too much room is all it took for the Big Game Tree Stands No. 1s to take the line and the win.

"We were running at a blistering pace at the front there but had those yellow flags to bunch us up. I think I still had a faster car. I was able to come around the top and show him, and I think I could have done it earlier, but wanted to wait until I had a spot where I could just get it, and keep it, but I showed him a little too soon and he took my line away," said Dobmeier of his attempts to take the lead in the closing laps.

Brian Brown came to third from eighth. Changing gears under the Lap 8 red, Brown was happy but felt he had a problem with tires on the restart. "It was really like my Right Rear Tire just didn't go after that red and when those guy started moving around out there and kinda showed Sammy where to go on the track, I just ended up running third so we'll figure it out and hopefully come back tomorrow and get a couple spots better."

Ian Madsen from ninth finished fourth with Bronson Maeschen slipping from the front row to complete the top five.

Terry McCarl came from fourteenth to sixth with Wayne Johnson following from fifteenth to seventh. Dusty Zomer was the night's Hard Charger from twentieth to eighth with Tasker Phillips ninth, and Sam Hafertepe, Jr. finishing tenth.

Friday night saw 56 drivers timing in for a weekend total of 103 drivers. Five Heat Races went Brian Brown, Bill Balog, Robbie Stillwaggon, Terry McCarl, and Wayne Johnson. The night's C-Feature was won by Chase Johnson. B-Feature victory went to Seth Brahmer.

Brian Brown was the night's quick time at 16.488 seconds. The Heat Race win along with a third in the A-Feature puts Brown as the high point driver going into Saturday with 496 points. Joe Beaver will join Brown on the front row with 491 points. Sammy Swindell with 478, Sam Hafertepe, Jr. with 477, and Tony Bruce, Jr. with 476 made up the top five point earners after two nights.

The 24th annual Arnold Motor Supply 360 Knoxville Nationals concludes on Saturday, August 2 with Hot Laps getting underway at 6:45 P.M. (CT). 305 Sprint cars will also compete. For continued updates, log onto http://www.ascsracing.com and http://www.knoxvilleraceway.com.
