Terry McCarl Tops FVP National Sprint League at Knoxville! Agan and Henderson Grab 360 Twins!

by Bill Wright

Knoxville, IA, July 4, 2015 – Terry McCarl and Danny Lasoski have dueled at Knoxville Raceway for four different decades. The rivalry came to life again Saturday night on Aspen Aire Night featuring the FVP National Sprint League. This time, it was McCarl who came out on top on "Heroes Night" on the Fourth of July. The Altoona, Iowa native won his 55th career feature at Knoxville, which is fourth all-time in the track’s storied history. It was also Twin Features Night for the 360 class at Knoxville, and Jon Agan and Justin Henderson picked up wins in that class.

Austin McCarl and Danny Lasoski started in row one of the 25-lap NSL feature event, but it was Terry McCarl, who used the low side of one and two to dispose of Lasoski, and the high side of three and four to pass his son for the lead to complete lap one. Lasoski moved by Austin on lap two for second in pursuit of the leader.

Dustin Selvage stopped with mechanical issues with three laps in the books. McCarl led Lasoski, Austin, Ian Madsen and Justin Henderson back to green flag racing. Madsen moved by Austin for third on lap four, before RJ Johnson slowed to a stop at the top of turn two with six laps complete.

McCarl took off well and held Lasoski at bay. Tasker Phillips who was running twelfth, lost a left front wheel and flipped twelve laps in, bringing out the red flag. McCarl shot out again, ahead of Lasoski, Madsen, Tim Kaeding and Austin. Justin Henderson entered the top five on the restart and took fourth from Kaeding on lap 18. At the same time, Lasoski reeled in McCarl in traffic as the veterans battled for the top spot.

Kaeding and the lapped car of AJ Moeller contacted on lap 20, and Moeller spun to a stop against the frontstretch fence. McCarl was never challenged in clean air the final five laps, picking up his second NSL win of the season. Lasoski trailed him ahead of Madsen, Henderson and Mark Dobmeier. Kaeding, Bill Balog, Dusty Zomer, Austin McCarl and Bryan Clauson rounded out the top ten.

Lynton Jeffrey set quick time over the field, while Moeller, Dakota Hendrickson, Paige Polyak and Henderson picked up heat race wins. Jeffrey also won the B main. Brian Brown suffered a scary incident in his heat race when something entered the cockpit. He was taken to the hospital for inspection of an arm injury.

"You break your back the first night out, then to be able to come back…" said an emotional McCarl in Victory Lane. "Everybody thinks you’re o.k., but…weve been having some problems the last few weeks. Doug (Rankin) did a great job figuring out we had a fuel pump going bad. To beat Lasoski and Ian right now…theyre on fire. You get out to a lead and have a good racecar early…you’re afraid late. I didn’t know if I should move around or not."

"He did a good job," said Lasoski of McCarl. "He got us on the start, and that was the end of the race. We got beside him, and as any good racecar driver would do, he took our line. I’m really proud of our team. They’ve worked hard."

Jon Agan utilized his pole position to lead every lap of the first of two 18-lap Twin Features for the 360 class. While Ian Madsen chased Agan in second position, Tony Shilling was on the move, gaining third from Clint Garner on lap three. Bryan Clauson had charged from 11th to sixth by lap four when he pulled pitside.

While Agan set a torried pace up front, Garner and Justin Henderson were battling in heavy lapped traffic. Henderson gained the fourth spot on lap eight. Madsen slowly reeled in Agan in traffic, but could not muster enough to challenge the leader.

For Agan, it was career win number ten in the 360 class. Madsen was second, ahead of Shilling, Henderson and Jamie Ball. Joe Beaver, Calvin Landis, hard-charger Dusty Zomer, Jake Bubak and Nate Van Haaften rounded out the top ten. Garner was involved in an incident in the final corner with Chris Martin. It relegated him to the final running position on the lead lap, which meant he would start on the pole of the second feature. He set quick time over the field, while Beaver, Dakota Hendrickson and Zomer won heat races. Sawyer Phillips won the B.

"We’ve had some bad luck this year," said Agan in Victory Lane. "Mid-Season Championship was kind of like our first night of the year. It’s been tough. We were really fast in the beginning of the year. We came here the first night after all the rainouts and we got taken out by a lapped car. You’re charging through those guys tonight and what a tricky track. You’re better than them, but you can’t be too tight in areas, or too free in areas."

Garner shot out from the pole in the second feature ahead of Hendrickson and Matt Moro. Henderson was on the move from his starting spot inside row six and was into fifth by lap four. Moro shot by Hendrickson on lap six for the runner-up spot.

While Garner had a five second lead by lap ten, Henderson moved into fourth on lap seven and then passed Hendrickson for third on lap eight. Garner was maneuvering traffic well, and had a straightaway lead when Henderson moved by Moro for second on lap 12. Agan would suffer a broken piston and retire before Tony Rost came to a stop with 12 laps down.

Garner shot away from Henderson on the restart, but Shilling was unable to exit the track in turn four, bringing a caution out on lap 14. This time, Henderson rocketed by the leader and went on to his third 360 win of the season and sixth in his career at Knoxville. Garner and Zomer rounded out a podium that had all drivers utilizing Parker Racing Engines. Moro was fourth ahead of Beaver. Hard-charger Bryan Clauson drove from 22nd to sixth, and Ball, Van Haaften, Hendrickson and Landis rounded out the top ten.

"What a fantastic racecar, what a fantastic racetrack," said Henderson. "It was a lot of fun tonight. It was ‘elbows up’ on the cushion. I had a lot of fun racing with Tim (Kaeding in the 410 feature) and I had a lot of fun racing with Clint (Garner). He did a really good job. I think he thought I was going to out-guess him, but he was fine the way he was. It’s never easy whether it’s the 360’s or 410’s. We’re doing our best to do our part."

Join us next Saturday night, July 11, for Hy-Vee Night at the Marion County Fair! Knoxville Championship Cup Series action will feature all three classes of sprint cars! For more information on Knoxville Raceway, visit www.KnoxvilleRaceway.com!
