Miscellanious Walking Around Knoxville Photos
Donny Schatz Roars to His Ninth FVP
Knoxville Nationals Championship! by Bryan Hulbert and Bill
Wright Making wholesale moves through traffic in
the closing laps, Donny was asked about the very close passes, “It’s not
the traffic that was bothering me. It was the restarts. It’s my job to get
through traffic. If I can’t then I’m probably going to lose my job.
The past couple weeks, seem like people get a run on you and can slide
you, so you just had to do something different. One time I’d go to the
bottom, one time I’d go to the top and keep mixing it up, but it’s hard to
do that without mixing yourself up.” “The boss was here tonight. Can’t thank
him [Tony Stewart] enough for all the support to allow us to be with Bad
Boy Buggies, Chevrolet Performance, and all our marketing partners to do
what we love to do.” Taking off from the pole, Donny Schatz
jumped to the lead with Kerry Madsen in tow. Working low on the Knoxville
Raceway, the Tony Stewart Racing No. 15 was joined by the No. 29 of Kerry
Madsen who railed the cushion. Closing on the lead on the third
rotation, Madsen continued to build momentum, pulling to the back bumper
Schatz off the fourth turn as the No. 15 swapped lines to the high side
down the front stretch to block the run of the American Racing Custom
Wheels No. 29. Keeping Donny within sight as the leaders
hit traffic on Lap 10, the Bad Boy Buggies No. 15 found roads blocked,
allowing Madsen to close in once again. With a full head of steam on Lap
12, Donny put a pair of slower cars between him and Madsen; leaving the
Aussie to contend with Danny Lasoski. Coming from sixth, the GoMuddy.com No. 2
worked cushion to hub on the Knoxville Raceway, trading second with Madsen
as the caution flew on Lap 16 for the No. 41 of Jason Johnson who shredded
the left rear tire. Underway, Madsen kept pace into the first
two turns with Lasoski in line. Unable to do anything with the No. 15, the
race for second saw Lasoski taking the spot on Lap 25, just as the field
came to the mid-point break. Changing gears on the No. 15 during the
five minute break, Schatz took the high line with Danny charging low.
Unable to advance to the lead, Donny began pulling away as Danny worked to
hold his second position, but would slip to fourth on Lap 32 as Kerry
Madsen flew by on the cushion with Brad Sweet taking the low line.
Watching as the No. 15 pulled away with a
2.104 second advantage, the red flag flew on Lap 35 for the No. 51 of Paul
McMahan who tripped the cushion in turn four battling for eighth with
Bryan Clauson. Quick work by the Pit Crew put the CJB Motorsports No. 51
back on track for the restart. Splitting lines on the restart, Madsen
again could not make work of the No. 15, but again had to contend with
Brad Sweet. Working low on Lap 37, Brad Sweet all but had Madsen cleared,
only to see the No. 29 squeeze between his Right Rear Tire and the wall.
Going back and forth for the runner-up
spot, the pair kept Schatz within seven tenths of a second as the caution
waved again on Lap 40. Again keeping Schatz to under a second
advantage, the pair worked to traffic on Lap 48 with Schatz boxed in by
back markers. With the center line barely open, Donny threaded the needle,
putting the finishing touches on his ninth FVP Knoxville Nationals
victory; crossing 1.363 seconds ahead of Kerry Madsen.
“I tried as hard as possible to get it
done. I got behind him in dirty air and was just was jumping around on the
cushion like an idiot, but I wasn’t going to leave anything on the table,”
said Madsen. “I thought it was on there. I thought I had a quicker car and
I just apologize for not getting the job done but he didn’t make a mistake
the last 15 laps. I was ready to pounce, but it didn’t
happen.” Holding on for third was Brad Sweet after
a hard battle with the No. 29. “I tell you what this is a huge step in
the right direction for Kasey Kahne Racing and the Ollie’s Bargain Barn
Outlet. The car was really good. We hit on some stuff at the Front Row
Challenge and we carried some momentum into here and when the time to hit
it right in the A-Main was right, we hit it. I really didn’t want to see
those yellows because I really felt like we were more maneuverable than
the guys in front of us, but hats off to Donny. He makes it really hard to
win this race.” Coming on strong in the second half of
the feature event, Shane Stewart came from 12th to fourth with
Joey Saldana completing the top-five. From 14th, Brian
Brown crossed sixth with Daryn Pittman going from 15th to
seventh. Having battled up front for so many laps, Danny Lasoski slipped
to finish eighth with Lucas Wolfe ninth and Greg Hodnett earning
hard-charger honros in tenth from the 23rd starting spot.
Wayne Johnson led the distance to win the
B-Feature. Running second at the white flag, Bill Balog ended up
with the win in the C-Feature as Davey Heskin ran out of fuel on the final
lap. D-Feature action was topped by Josh Baughman. Jimmy Light captured
the win in the E-Feature, becoming the first driver in the history of the
Knoxville Nationals to win the consolation feature twice; Light also won
the event in 2014. Best appearing car for the
55th FVP Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey’s General
Store, worth $500, went to Justin Henderson for the third season running.
Lance Moss and Dusty Zomer completed the top three. Best appearing crew
was won by Ian Madsen’s team who also won $500. Wayne Johnson and Kraig
Kinser’s crews completed the podium. Aaron Reutzel earned Rookie of the Year
in the Roth Motorsports No. 83. The “Jesse Hockett Mr. Sprint Car”
Southern Iowa Sprintweek title went to Terry McCarl.

Bryan Clauson
Breaks Through for First Win at Knoxville, Trip to Saturday’s
A! by Bryan Hulbert and
Bill Wright “I told these guys after Wednesday night,
I think we had the car to get it done and we honestly felt like if we were
in the fourth or fifth row of the ‘B’ we would think about coming back,”
commented Clauson when asked about the teams decision to compete in
Friday’s last chance event. “I can’t say enough about my guys,
they’ve been busting their butts all year. I’ve been trying to catch up
and do my job, and it’s taken all summer but I can’t thank Shane Bowers
enough. Him, Adam Clark, Cole Wood, just everyone on this racing team. It
feels good to be locked into tomorrow night. We talked about getting a win
here, and how special it would be and what better way to do it than here
during the Knoxville Nationals. I don’t care what you call it, we
just won at Knoxville!” Taking off third, Clauson moved to the
runner-up spot on Lap 4 with the pass on Danny Dietrich. A small bobble on
the part of the Matt Wood Racing No. 17 allowed the No. 29w to retake the
spot, putting the pair in a multi lap battle with Clauson finally taking
the position. Chasing Billy Alley for the race lead,
the pair worked Lap 8 with traffic about to come into play. With a run off
the cushion exiting the fourth turn, Clauson broke rank to the bottom,
sliding to the cushion with the race lead in the second turn on the
following circuit. With Dietrich in tow to second, the
Gettysburg, Pennsylvania shoe closed on Clauson, with the run short lived.
Building a comfortable advantage, a few close calls in traffic brought
Dietrich and Alley within striking distance, but was quick enough to keep
the pair at bay. As the leader split slower cars, the
inadvertent caution waved for the No. 18 of Ian Madsen on Lap 22.
The Australian spun while running fourth; doing a pair of donuts. Madsen
was placed eighth in the restart order. Fanning out into the first turn on the
restart, Clauson stuck top shelf to hold the lead, pulling to a 0.973
second advantage at the drop of the checkered flag.
Danny Dietrich raced to the runner-up
spot, earning 18th and his first feature start on Saturday
night, “That was the goal coming into tonight. You know we wanted to win
obviously, but Bryan was really fast and we were happy to run second. That
caution came out, and I really wasn’t worried about contending and costing
ourselves a spot in tomorrow night’s main event.” Racing for the lead early on, Brent Marks
made a late race move around Alley to cross third for the 19th
starting spot on Saturday night; his first start in the $150,000 to win
event, “That was a really fun race, and I’m just so excited to be in the
A-Main here at Knoxville. This is awesome. It’s a dream come true
and I didn’t really care about that win tonight, I just wanted to get into
the A-Main.” For the first time since 2008, a fourth
place by Nebraska’s Billy Alley will see the Ironwood Builders No. 3
starting 20th on Saturday night. “That’s something a kid dreams about. I
lay in bed and I think about moments like that; racing with these guys,”
said an elated Billy Alley. “Joe Steinbach, he gave me an awesome
opportunity and the truth is, we didn’t have a motor a week ago, and ours
wasn’t going to be done so Greg Nichols and Jack Woods at Speedway Motors
bought us a motor and said, go run it.” Mark Dobmeier from 13th came
up to complete the top-five. Chad Kemenah from 12th was
sixth with Ian Madsen settling for seventh. Lynton Jeffrey crossed eighth
with Jamie Veal and Craig Dollansky making up the top-ten.
Single lap, split qualifying for Friday’s
program saw Brent Marks fastest in Group A at 15.586 seconds. One of the
few drivers to utilize the low line in his qualifying run, Billy Alley
topped Group B with a 15.987 second lap. Six Heats, split evenly by the group
qualifying went to Lynton Jeffrey, Bryan Clauson, Christopher Bell, Jamie
Veal, Jac Haudenschild, and Jacob Allen. Going 10 laps in the C-Feature,
Bud Kaeding topped the event with twin, 12 lap B-Features, based on Group
A and B qualifying went to Steve Kinser and Aaron Reutzel.

World Challenge Win Gives Lynton
Jeffrey Final Ticket to Nationals
Championship! by Bill Wright Randy Hannagan jumped out to the early lead in the 20-lap event over Jeffrey and Kraig Kinser. Jeffrey used a slide job to gain the point from Hannagan on lap two, and took off from the field on the cushion after a lap three restart for a spun Sheldon Haudenschild. McFadden shot to third on lap
four, while Daryn Pittman moved into the top five on lap five.
Haudenschild brought out another caution and retired with a blown right
rear with nine laps in the books. Jeffrey led Hannagan, McFadden,
Pittman and Kinser back to green. McFadden stormed into second on lap 12
and stalked Jeffrey for five laps. On lap 17, he shot to the bottom
of turn three and slid in front of Jeffrey to take the lead. The
native of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, pulled away and appeared to be
heading for the big show on Saturday night. Unfortunately, his motor
went south with two laps to go, handing the win to
Jeffrey. Jeffrey won by a large margin over
Hannagan, Pittman, Brooke Tatnell and Brad Sweet. Kinser, Ian
Madsen, hard-charger Christopher Bell, Tim Kaeding and Kerry Madsen
rounded out the top ten. “I commiserate for (McFadden), he had a
great car,” said Jeffrey in Victory Lane. “He’s had a little bit of
bad luck in America this year. That sucked for him. He did a
great job and got unlucky. I’ve done that myself. This team’s
worked hard this year. I’m really thinking about the Swindell’s
right now. I’d like to send some love and some prayers to the family
and Kevin. I just hope he gets well, and I dedicate this win to
him.” Join us Saturday night, August 15 for the championship proceedings at the 55th FVP Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey’s General Stores! Terry McCarl
Storms from Ninth to Win Thursday Night at the Knoxville
Nationals! by Bryan Hulbert and
Bill Wright “Man, I’ve got to thank Doug (Rankin) and
Austin (McCarl), and everyone on my crew. We were horrible in the Heat and
lucky to finish where we did and we just made wholesale changes on the car
and wow!” said a nearly breathless Terry McCarl. “What a racecar. This
A.R.T. was rolling great out there, and Tommy Rider gives us awesome
engines. We did the best we could qualifying, and missed it by one. What a
racecar, I could put it anywhere I wanted.” Gridding the field ninth, McCarl began
working his way through the field as Danny Lasoski took off into the race
lead, advancing into the top five on the sixth round as the race from
second back was chaos with drivers three wide at both ends of the track
following a caution on Lap 4. Keeping low, tight racing off turn four
allowed McCarl to jump from seventh to third in a shot.
After a caution on Lap 8 for Dale Blaney,
McCarl gave chase as Danny Lasoski was challenged briefly by Jason Johnson
who tried to slide the No. 2 in turns three and four, but to no avail.
Building momentum, Terry began to close
on the Priority Aviation No. 41. On the back bumper of Johnson on Lap 11,
McCarl made a move the following lap without success. Losing little
momentum, Lap 13 saw the pass for the runner-up
spot. The red was shown on Lap 14 for Brooke
Tatnell, who was able walk away, and the ensuing restart was called back
as Clint Garner tagged the cone. Single file to the green, McCarl tracked
high on Lasoski into the first turns, pulling to the hub in turn three.
With a full head of steam, Terry let the right rear speak for itself
across the racing surface, taking the lead on Lap 15.
Asked about the pass for the lead, Terry
replied, “Well, I just knew what he was doing on those restarts, and what
he did to Jason. He was eating that top up, and I hadn’t been to the top.
We had a start, gave me a chance to practice it, and on the other restart
I perfected it a little better, and I think he missed it a little
bit.” Held up briefly on Lap 21 in slower
traffic, it would not be enough to deny McCarl victory, netting enough
points to start eighth on Saturday night. Danny Lasoski held on for the runner-up
spot, earning the Dover, Mo. shoe the sixth spot in Saturday’s A-Feature.
Amid an infamous Terry McCarl kiss, Danny said, “We got good points, just
got beat by a good driver, and a good car, that’s all you can say. He had
a good pace, and a lot of times, it’s better to be running second. He did
what he had to do, and he just got beat.” Earning his third podium with the World
of Outlaws in 2015, Jason Johnson earned the bronze step in the Mesilla
Valley Transportation No. 41. “I tell you what, these Priority Aviation
guys have been working their tails off this week. I just can’t say enough
about this race team. Phillip and Cole have done a great job. We have a
great group of supporters here, and to be on the podium on a prelim night;
we’re pretty pleased,” said Johnson who will start ninth in Saturday’s
feature event. Kerry Madsen came up to fourth after
starting seventh with Brian Brown coming out of the B-Feature to claw from
23rd to fifth in the Casey’s General Store / FVP No. 21.
Joey Saldana was sixth with James
McFadden settling for seventh after starting 13th and bouncing
around the top-ten most of the race. Lucas Wolfe crossed eighth, Stevie
Smith ninth, and Brad Sweet tenth. With 57 drivers drawing in, the weekend
total comes to 112 drivers making the trip to the 55th annual
FVP Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey’s General Stores. Five Heats
went to R.J. Johnson, Kerry Madsen, Dusty Zomer, Danny Lasoski, and Sammy
Swindell. Kevin Swindell was involved in a violent crash in the
first heat and was taken to the hospital for
observation. C-Feature action was topped by Bill Balog
with Clint Garner getting the B-Feature win over Greg Wilson by 0.024
seconds. A thrilling race to the end, the top five were separated by only
0.912 seconds. With the points tallied from Wednesday
and Thursday, Donny Schatz will lead the field to the green on Saturday
night with a ninth Nationals Championship on his mind. This marks the
18th time Donny has made the cut for Saturday’s feature event.
Kerry Madsen will start his ninth championship feature from the outside of
the front row. Join us tomorrow night, Friday, August 14 for night #3 of the 55th FVP Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey’s General Stores!
