Wright KNOXVILLE,
Iowa (September 15, 2016) – Billy
Moyer scored his 815th career late model victory Thursday
night to open the 13th Annual Lucas Oil Late Model
Nationals presented by Casey’s General Stores at the Knoxville
Raceway. The Des Moines, Iowa native now living in Batesville,
Arkansas cashed in $7,000 for his ninth career win at this historic
oval. He led all 25 laps in the non-stop event, setting a late
model record for time at 8:19.6. Moyer
led Brandon Sheppard, Shane Clanton, Josh Richards and Jimmy Mars early in
the 25-lap feature event. The leaders approached lapped traffic
at the halfway point on the fast track. Richards and Clanton
put on a spirited battle for third, with Richards winning out on the
fifteenth round. Richards
would challenge Sheppard briefly late in the going for
second. As the two battled, Moyer pulled away for his popular
win. Sheppard held onto second, ahead of Richards, Clanton and
Mars. Bobby Pierce, Chris Simpson, Don O’Neal, Jonathan
Davenport and Tim McCreadie completed the top ten. Group

Richards Scores Perfect Night at Knoxville Late Model
Nationals! by
Bill
Wright Jimmy
Owens jumped from his third starting position to lead lap one, but
pole-sitter, Shannon Babb grabbed the point on the second
circuit. With three laps in the books, fifth place running
Chase Junghans slowed in turn two, bringing the caution. Babb
led Owens, Rodney Sanders, Scott Bloomquist and Dale McDowell back to
green. On
lap seven, Richards surged from sixth to fourth, and then took third from
Sanderson on lap nine. Thursday night’s winner, Billy Moyer,
came to a stop with overheating issues with 12 laps
recorded. Babb would maintain his lead when the green flag
fell, but Richards was on the move. He used the low groove to
power by Owens for second on lap 15. A
lap later, the final caution of the race flew for Brandon Sheppard, who
stopped in turn four. Babb led the final charge over Richards,
Owens, Sanders and McDowell. Richards stalked Babb and used the
low side to shoot by Babb on lap 19. Babb held off Owens by
just .006 of a second for the runner-up spot. McDowell and Mike
Marlar followed. Sanders, Jimmy Mars, Bloomquist, Jonathan
Davenport and Chris Simpson completed the top ten. McDowell
joined Richards as setting quick time over his group. Tim
Lance, who won the second heat in track record time, was joined by other
preliminary winners, Richards, Sheppard, Junghans, Dennis Erb Jr. and Chad
Mahder. Gregg Satterlee won the C main and Tim McCreadie won
the B. “This
feels awesome,” said Richards. “We had a great point night last
night and the car was good. The track was so different tonight
with the rain water. We’ll see what we have tomorrow. The
car was phenomenal again tonight. I can’t thank the crew
enough. We’ve had a fantastic year, but tomorrow’s the one
we’re really looking towards. We’re in the best position we can
be in. The bottom was good. I just had to make sure
I got pointed the right way.” Join

Marlar Wins Lucas Oil Late Model Knoxville
Nationals! Front
row starters Jimmy Owens and Josh Richards were the early front runners of
the 100 lap event, Owens led the opening ten laps until Richards used
lapped traffic to get by Owens and pull away. It appeared that Richards,
the four-time runner-up at Knoxville would go on to finally win the
Knoxville Nationals. Marlar started in row two and fell to fifth early but
was able to claw his way back to the leaders. On lap 40 Marlar made his
move and passed Richards. The
event was marred by several caution periods and Marlar was able to hold
off challenges by Richards and later from Scott Bloomquist on every
restart to drive away and win by 1.188 seconds of Blooquist at the
checkered flag. The
win was Marlar’s second of his career at Knoxville who won a Nationals
preliminary in 2012. Marlar finished fourth in 2015, third in 2014, and
sixth in 2012. The part-time super dirt late model driver was able to put
together the winning combination to become the eleventh different winner
of the Knoxville Nationals crown jewel event. Bloomquist
started eighth and was running fourth at halfway. His car came alive and
was running second by lap 60. Bloomer was able to driver beside Marlar on
a few occasions and pass him briefly at one point during the race, but
fell short of winning a record third Nationals. 19
year-old Bobby Pierce finished third in his first entry at Knoxville in
four years. The youngster looked strong driving from his tenth starting
position to stand upon the podium a
week after winning the World 100. Richards
was running third when he pulled in with five laps remaining. Jimmy Owens
would pull in on lap 46 with mechanical woes as would Jonathan Davenport
on lap 79. C

Marlar and Kyle Bronson set quick time for their respective
groups. Jimmy Owens, Steve Francis, Darrell Lanigan, Moyer,
Greg Satterlee and Jason Rauen won heat races. Spencer Diercks
won the D main, Jake O’Neil claimed the C main and Mike Marlar took the B
main.
Drivers
will take the best point total of their two qualifying
nights. Richards led tonight’s charge with 489, followed by
Chris Simpson (483), Moyer (482), Clanton (479) and Pierce
(476).
“We
tweaked on the car a little bit and made the right decisions for once,”
said Moyer in Victory Lane. “We’ve got to figure out that motor
deal…it’s running a little warm. We’ll keep plugging away
here. The car was pretty darn good. I never really
did try the bottom at all, but I messed around with the middle and
top. We’ve got something to work on the rest of the
week. I got up over the cushion, and thought I’d thrown the
driveshaft out of the thing. It kind of
vibrated. When I got down off of it, the next lap I felt
o.k.”
