Kyle Larson Races to Brandt Professional Agriculture Night #1 of the
57th Annual 5-hour ENERGY Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey’s General
Stores! KNOXVILLE, Iowa (August 9, 2017) – Kyle Larson led wire to wire on Brandt Professional Agriculture Night #1 of the 57th Annual 5-hour ENERGY Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey’s General Stores at the Knoxville Raceway Saaturday. The Elk Grove, California native guided Paul Silva’s #57 flawlessly through traffic to claim his third career feature win and $12,000 at the “Sprint Car Capital of the World.” Donny Schatz emerged atop the all-important point standings earning 492. He was followed by Brad Sweet (489), Kerry Madsen (487), Greg Hodnett (472), Larson (469) and Shane Stewart (469). Larson grabbed the lap one lead from Austin McCarl, who had gotten the jump at the green. Greg Hodnett settled into second in the 25-lapper, ahead of Paul McMahan and Donny Schatz. Schatz used the low side of the track to gain fourth on lap two. Parker Price-Miller came to a stop when his nose wing came askew three laps in. Larson pulled away again, while Kerry Madsen moved into the top five. Schatz drove by Hodnett to take third on lap five, and Madsen followed him into fourth. The leaders entered lapped traffic on the tenth circuit, and McCarl, Schatz and Madsen battled for several laps in second, third and fourth. Schatz would clear the group on lap 14 and continue his pursuit of the leader. Hodnett would shoot under Madsen for fourth on lap 14, and slid by McCarl for third on lap 17. Larson would maintain his advantage to the checkers, followed by Schatz, Hodnett, Brad Sweet and McCarl. Madsen, Shane Stewart, Paul McMahan, Christopher Bell and Bill Balog completed the top ten. Madsen set quick time on the night at 14.886. Kevin Thomas Jr., Jac Haudenschild, Matt Moro, Schatz and Bill Balog were heat winners. Lucas Wolfe won the B main. “I definitely have to have the conversation with him, that’s for sure!” said Larson in Victory Lane as the crowd roared, in reference to his Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series owner, Chip Ganassi, and his ability to make it back from practice in Michigan for Saturday’s championship in Knoxville. “I’ve never been this good in a sprint car in my career. To win a prelim night here with Paul Silva is amazing. Our car was really good the whole feature. We were a little loose on the bottom, and I felt we moved up at the right time. I’m super-happy to win! I’m nervous about the phone call. Hopefully, (Chip) is listening and knows how much I appreciate everything he allows me to do racing sprint cars. If we can race Saturday night, that will be a dream come true. To win here Saturday…I feel like we have a great shot. In the Cup stuff, those are the best group of guys to work with. I feel like we have a great shot (at a championship). I feel fast, and I’m having fun. It would be a lot of fun to get done practicing Saturday and know I’m racing here.” “We tried something there to see if we may be a little better,” said Schatz. “We may have been a little worse. You have to do that. We got ourselves in a good spot in the heat race and qualified o.k. You have to finish good and we did. Kyle was really good there. When the racetrack changed, he got up on it. We were just a little free, but my hat’s off to this race team. They do incredible things together. They work hard together. Racing is one of them games where we argue, enjoy it, and do everything together.” “I’ve been running the bottom pretty well, but it went away from me there,” said Hodnett. “I had to move back up to the top, and I think I held my own and didn’t lose a whole lot. We’re still trying to figure it out, but the guys are doing a great job on the car. We’ve got a great fan base here, and a great racetrack. There are two lanes here, and you can’t ask for anything better. I appreciate all the effort that Knoxville puts into this. We’re very fortunate to be able to come here.” Join us tomorrow night for Toyota Night #2 of the 57th Annual 5-hour ENERGY Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey’s General Stores! David Gravel is Perfect on Toyota Night #2 at the 57th Annual 5-hour
ENERGY Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey's General
Stores! KNOXVILLE, Iowa (August 10, 2017) - David Gravel swept Toyota Night #2 at the 57th Annual 5-hour ENERGY Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey's General Stores Thursday night at Knoxville Raceway. After setting quick time, the Watertown, Connecticut native won his heat and the feature after starting eighth in both events aboard the CJB Motorsports #5. It was the first time for a perfect 500-point score since Steve Kinser did it in 1992. The win was Gravel's second in his career at Knoxville, paid him $12,000 and set him up on the pole of Saturday's night's $150,000 to win championship event. Disaster befell Knoxville Nationals defending champion, Jason Johnson before a circuit could be completed in the 25-lap main event. After getting sideways, he collected the machine of Dominic Scelzi. Scelzi would restart at the tail after repairs, but Johnson would not be as lucky. Once the green fell again, pole-sitter, Mark Dobmeier, showed the way, ahead of Brooke Tatnell and Wayne Johnson. Gravel entered the top four on the second lap, and claimed third from Wayne Johnson on lap four. Brian Brown would drive from sixth to fourth on laps six and seven. Gravel used the low side to shoot by Tatnell for second on lap eight, as Dobmeier entered lapped traffic. Tatnell's great third place run would derail on lap ten with a blown right rear. The caution negated a Gravel pass of Dobmeier for the lead in turn two. Dobmeier would pull away in clean air on the restart, while Brown challenged Gravel for the second spot, taking it briefly. The leaders entered lapped traffic again on lap 18, and Gravel slid under Dobmeier in heavy lapped traffic on lap 19 to take the lead for good. Gravel pulled away to victory, while Brown took second with two laps to go. Dobmeier, Ian Madsen and Daryn Pittman followed. Wayne Johnson, Terry McCarl, Danny Dietrich, Spencer Bayston and hard-charger, Rico Abreu completed the top ten. Joining Gravel as heat winners, were Chris Martin, Thomas Kennedy, Dale Blaney and Josh Baughman. Abreu won the B main, while Lee Jacobs took the C. Gravel will start Saturday night's main event alongside Donny Schatz. They will be joined in order by Brad Sweet, Kerry Madsen, Brian Brown, Terry McCarl, Daryn Pittman, Greg Hodnett, Kyle Larson, Shane Stewart, Austin McCarl, Paul McMahan, Mark Dobmeier, Rico Abreu, Ian Madsen and Wayne Johnson. Tradition dictates that the ten drivers locking into Saturday's B main will stay put instead of taking the option of starting over with the remaining field on Friday. That was the case again this year. Those drivers included Justin Henderson, who will be on the pole, Trey Starks, Jason Sides, Dusty Zomer, Lucas Wolfe, Christopher Bell, Danny Dietrich, Tim Shaffer, Matt Juhl and Dominic Scelzi. "I did get the lead (on lap 10), but the yellow came out," said Gravel in Victory Lane. "I knew Mark would be good in open track. I was just going to run behind him until we hit traffic and run the bottom. I was lucky I got back by Brian. I made the mistake of running down the track, but the top was the fastest way around. I'm in a zone right now. Little holes look big. Like Kyle Larson said, I've never driven a sprint car this good. Hopefully, Saturday, we can duke it out. I'm happy to be in the books. Hopefully, we have something for them Saturday." "I'm just proud to be standing here," said Brown. "I could have named you five or six times throughout this night I should be on the hook. From the C main last year to here we are now…we've just wanted an opportunity to win the Knoxville Nationals and we've put ourselves in position. Congratulations to David and his team. I never thought we'd see a perfect score again in my lifetime. The exciting part is we have the World Challenge tomorrow to work on things." "He showed speed all night long," said Dobmeier of Gravel. "He had it from the word go. The lapped cars held me up a bit. In the end, I think I was a little too patient with them. I needed to try the bottom in one and two. That's where I lost the race. Tonight it bit me. We've only hit two weekly shows here, and we've definitely stepped our big track program up." Join us tomorrow night for FVP Night at the 57th Annual 5-hour ENERGY

Jason Johnson Wins Feature and World Challenge Friday on FVP Night
at the 57th Annual Knoxville Nationals Presented by Casey's General
Stores! by Bill Wright and Bryan Hulbert KNOXVILLE, Iowa (August 11, 2017) - Like an Iowa cyclone, Jason Johnson
ambushed the competition Friday at Knoxville Raceway on FVP Night at the
57th Annual Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey's General Stores. Not
only did the Eunice, Louisiana native claim the feature event over 72 cars
to lock himself into Saturday night's $150,000 finale, but he also claimed
the Speed Sport World Challenge worth $10,000. The top four finishers
claimed spots 17-20 in Saturday's championship event. Joining Johnson were
Logan Schuchart, Aaron Reutzel and Cory Eliason. Jacob Allen led early in the 25-lap main event ahead of Johnson and
Reutzel early. Johnson would waste little time taking the lead as he
showed the way on lap two. Meanwhile, Joey Saldana rolled into the top
three on the same circuit. Lynton Jeffrey, who had won the first of two B
mains, had climbed to ninth in four laps before tipping over in turn
three. He was uninjured. Johnson pulled away on the restart, as Reutzel shot by Saldana for
fourth on lap seven. Schuchart was making gains on the low side of the
track and grabbed fourth two laps later. Eliason moved into the top five
by lap ten. Schuchart's mastery of the low groove continued, as he shot
from fourth to second on lap 12. His teammate, Allen was running third on
lap 17 when he hopped the infield berm allowing Reutzel and Eliason to
move into the third and fourth lock-in spots for Saturday. The top four would remain the same to the checkers. Chad Kemenah, who
won the second B main, finished fifth, and Spencer Bayston, Sheldon
Haudenschild, Brooke Tatnell, Tim Kaeding and Sammy Swindell rounded out
the top ten. Allen and Johnson set quick times in their respective groups,
and Sheldon Haudenschild, Tatnell, Saldana, Johnson, Swindell and Kraig
Kinser won heats. Aussie Jason Kendrick took the C main. Jake Bubak and
Matt Moro were heat flip victims on a rough night for crashes. Five cars
turned over in the first B main, including Kendrick, Tayler Malsam, Dustin
Selvage, RJ Johnson and Rager Phillips. Fortunately, no one was
injured. "Last night definitely didn't pan out the way we'd been looking for,"
said Johnson in Victory Lane. "It was phenomenal job that David (Gravel)
did (Thursday) getting full points. It kind of inspired me really. In our
own way, we kind of did the same thing tonight. The guys gave me a fast
race car. Hats off to the JJR/Marshall team. How cool would it be if we
battled from the back and beat those guys (tomorrow night)?" Speed Sport World Challenge James McFadden used a strong low groove to take the early lead in the
20-lap Speed Sport World Challenge. Thomas Kennedy settled into second,
ahead of Jason Johnson, Dominic Scelzi and Lynton Jeffrey. Kennedy's second place run would come to an end on lap five, when he
stopped in turn one. Jason assumed the second spot for a restart that saw
a four-wide battle for position behind the leaders. On lap seven, Johnson
would shoot by the 2016-17 Australian World Series Sprintcars champion for
the lead. A fifth running Brooke Tatnell would exit on lap ten. Johnson would pull away, but with two laps to go, he was slowed in
heavy traffic. McFadden gained within three car lengths, but came up short
in his bid to pass the leader. Brad Sweet ened up third, ahead of Scelzi
and Brian Brown. Jeffrey, Ian Madsen, Greg Hodnett, Schuchart and Shane
Stewart completed the top ten. Join us tomorrow night as the 57th Annual 5-hour ENERGY Knoxville
Nationals presented by Casey's General Stores comes to a close! For more

Donny Schatz Makes It An Even Ten Knoxville Nationals
Victories! KNOXVILLE, Iowa (August 12, 2017) - Donny Schatz continues to add to his legendary resume at the Knoxville Raceway, as he took his tenth career championship in the 57th Annual 5-hour ENERGY Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey's General Stores Saturday night at the Knoxville Raceway. It was the tenth win in twelve years for the Fargo, North Dakota driver, and his eighth aboard the Tony Stewart Racing #15. The win was worth $150,000 and added to the stuff of legends for Donny at Knoxville. David Gravel, who entered on the pole in the 50-lapper with his perfect score from Thursday night, led early over Schatz and Kerry Madsen. By lap six, he was in lapped traffic. Gravel maneuvered it well, but Schatz stayed close. On the sixteenth lap, Schatz would briefly take the point on the backstretch, but Gravel battled back by. On lap 19, Austin McCarl went up in smoke, bringing the first caution of the event. Gravel led Schatz, Madsen, Brad Sweet and Brian Brown back to green flag racing. Defending champion, Jason Johnson came from 21st into the top ten by lap 20. His momentum was slowed on lap 22, when Gravel would lose a motor while leading. The disappointment for the Connecticut driver gave the lead to Schatz. Kyle Larson also inherited a top five spot, and drove by Brown and Sweet for third on the restart. A caution for Terry McCarl, who slowed after getting into the turn three wall, slowed things again. At that point, the mandatory stop was implemented. After the pause, Schatz led Madsen, Larson, Sweet and Shane Stewart back to green. Madsen took a shot at the leader, but a slider in turn two fell short, allowing Larson to cruise by into second. While Schatz led Larson, Madsen and Stewart, Sweet and Brown exchanged the fifth spot several times. A final yellow flag flew with twelve laps to go for Greg Hodnett, who stopped in turn four. It erased a 2.2 second lead for Schatz. Back in clean air, Schatz was strong up front. With five laps to go, he entered lapped traffic again. With several cars side by side in front of him, Larson would close. On the white flag lap, Larson would make a sliding attempt in turn three that would fall short. Schatz would win his tenth Nationals ahead of Larson, Madsen, Stewart and Sweet. Brown, Aaron Reutzel, Rico Abreu, Daryn Pittman and Ian Madsen rounded out the top ten. Rager Phillips won the E main, Jamie Veal won the D, James McFadden claimed the C, and Jason Sides emerged victorious in a highly competitive B main. Schatz's crew chief Ricky Warner received Crew Chief of the Nationals honors, taking home a Craftsman Tool Box. Reutzel was the Hard-charger, earning a Max Pappis steering wheel. TheCushion.com awarded $500 to Rookie of the Nationals Dominic Scelzi. Ian Madsen's KCP Racing #18 was awarded "Best Appearing Car", followed by Terry McCarl and David Gravel. Best Appearing Crew went to Jason Johnson, followed by Ian Madsen and Harli White. "I did everything I could to get by (in traffic)," said Schatz in Victory Lane. "That's how it works some days. You can't frustrated by it. You have to figure out what to do. I was off the pace, I knew someone would be coming (at the end of the race). Kyle normally finds everything there is in a race car. You got to stay on your toes with him. He's an awesome sprint car driver. It stinks that he has another career to deal with I'm just glad that he's part of the sport and still comes back. We're glad to get this win. It's incredible. This whole race team is incredible with what they do. We just won the Knoxville Nationals!" "That was a fun, tough race," said Larson. "We had some good restarts and got to second. We were maintaining pace with him. We were just waiting for lapped traffic. I knew he'd be good in lapped traffic, but I figured there might be a couple times when he wouldn't clear somebody and get tight. The times he got tight, I got tight on the cushion. It was still a heck of a race. I hammered the wall coming off four coming for the white. I feel that if I hadn't done that, I could have gotten a run and maybe cleared him in two. I just made a costly mistake and ended up second. It was still a good race for (car owner/crew chief) Paul (Silva) and I. We still had fun. Thanks to the fans for talking to Chip (Ganassi) and helping us come out." "I think I had a really good car to contend for the victory," said Kerry Madsen beside the Tod Quiring #2M. "In traffic, I thought I had a better car than the two cars in front. I thought, 'No worries', we usually get to traffic in those deals. Then the caution would come out. I thought I had a shot at him on the restart (after the stoppage). I figured if he left the door open, I was going to go for it. Unfortunately, that cost me second. I was on Kyle's rear the whole way, but I was never close enough to make a move. I just want to thank my team for working so hard."
