Larson takes Goodyear Knoxville Nationals Opener Bryan Hulbert - Knoxville, Iowa (August 8, 2012) Kyle Larson has already proven beyond the shadow of a doubt that he is among the best drivers in the nation. Putting an exclamation point on his young career the Elk Grove, California racer grabbed the rain delayed opening night win of the 52nd Goodyear Knoxville Nationals. "We were really good in clean air there. Its such a big deal and weve never really been out front like that in clean air and the car was really operating once I got out front" commented Larson in victory lane. Asked about the race in general Larson replied, "Those restarts were getting me kind of nervous. I could see the 15 inching up on the board every time. I didnt like that but I just had to make sure I got a clean restart and got through one and two nice and make sure I didnt blow a left rear tire cause I was worried about that a lot." Taking off third, the Abreu Vineyard No. 1k would settle in behind Jason Sides, Randy Hannagan, and early leader Davey Heskin. Holding off several challenges from Brian Paulus, Larson would focus his attention on Jason Sides. Running away at the front of the field, the back of the field was in sight by lap seventeen as Heskin tempted fate with daring three wide passes. Holding a fair amount of breathing room, the Deluxe Crates No. 56 continued his march around the back markers as the battle on track turned to fifth. In pursuit of Brian Paulus, four time World of Outlaws champion Donny Schatz would work low on the Tear-Off Appeal No. 28 with Paulus able to hold on to the fifth spot. Coming around to complete lap twelve, the caution would fly as the No. 02 of Mike Reinke slowed to a stop on the high side of turn four. As the caution flew for Reinke, a puff of smoke and flash of flames would send the No. 1x of Randy Hannagan out of the runner up spot and into the pits. Hannagan would be joined by Kerry Madsen as both drivers saw engines expiring. Reinke would be scored twenty-fourth with Madsen twenty-third, and Hannagan twenty-second. Retaking the green Davey Heskin would see the top spot taken away as Jason Sides pulled off the slide job in turns one and two. With Sides pulling to an immediate advantage, Kyle Larson worked by Heskin for the runner up spot. Working to complete lap fourteen, Jason Sides would see his night come an abrupt end as the left-rear tire exploded midway thought turns one and two, whipping Sides around before sending the Wetherington Tractor Service No. 7s flipping. Able to restart after a visit to the work area, Sides would ultimately see his night end two laps later; coming to a stop inside turns three and four. Jason would be scored twentieth. Assuming the race lead, Larson would be trailed by Heskin, Paulus, Schatz, and Lucas Wolfe with four laps to run. Taking away second on the restart, Paulus would begin reeling in Larson until mechanical problems saw the No. 28 slowing and the caution waving with one lap to run. Taking the green for the final time, Kyle Larson would go unchallenged for the preliminary night victory with Davey Heskin holding off several late race charges from Donny Schatz for second. Racing into the nights feature from the B-Main, Craig Dollansky would finish an impressive fourth with Lucas Wolfe round out the top five. Brooke Tatnell finished sixth with Shane Stewart, who also transferred from the B-Main, taking seventh. Joey Saldana was eighth with Dustin Selvage and Jonathan Allard making up the top ten. Racing continues at the 52nd Goodyear Knoxville Nationals Thursday with hot laps and qualifying scheduled to begin at 7:15pm. Mike Reinke (19); It's Meyers on Night Two in Knoxville Drama Abounds as Henderson Triumphs at Knoxville Friday Night Bryan Hulbert/Bill Wright - Knoxville, Iowa (August 10, 2012) Finding himself mired deep in the B-Feature on Saturday, Justin Henderson took advantage of the new Friday night format at the Knoxville Nationals with drama filled race to the win. Donny Schatz took his third career Speed Sport World Challenge to top off an exciting night at Knoxville. "Its been a roller coaster of a week. Im so excited I cant even talk right now" commented Henderson. "This new format threw us for a loop tonight. We didnt know what to think about it. Its not all bad I guess since we would have been starting eleventh in the B-Main under normal circumstances, so to come out here and win this race is kind of a historic night." Firing from the sixth position, the Buffalo Wild Wings No. 82 watched as Cody Darrah capitalized on an outside front row starting position to lead the way. After falling back to the runner up spot on the start David Gravel was quick to get back in contention for the win, battling to the inside line before taking it up to the fence to grab the lead from Darrah on lap four. Battling back on the berm, Darrah would set in as Dale Blaney waited for his chance. Slowing for a caution on lap nine, Danny Lasoski saw his gamble go south as "The Dude" suffered a flat right rear tire. Able to limp around to the work area, the Zemco No. 1z would restart at the tail of the field as Gravel led the field to the green with Darrah, Blaney, Holtgraver, and Justin Henderson making up the top five. Planting the right rear on the cushion, Henderson would jump two spots to third with more on the way only to see the caution lights blink on with fourteen laps remaining as Jeff Swindell spun to a stop in turn three. Swindell would continue. On the move with the green flag waving, Justin Henderson continued to utilize the top side, taking away the runner up spot with eleven laps to run. Fading back to fifth in the midpoint of the race, Dale Blaney would make his way back into the top three on lap sixteen as the battle for the lead shaped up. Henderson to the top, Gravel to the bottom, and slower cars approaching would see the top two drivers swapping lines as Henderson dropped to the middle of the track; forcing Gravel to take to the cushion as the pair took the battle three wide with the back markers. Tripping the cushion, Gravel would lose some ground but not enough to drop the No. 89g out of the battle as Gravel worked back side by side for the race lead. With only four spots holding the key to Saturdays $150,000 to win feature event, the battles for the final transfer spots were a sight to behold as Dale Blaney worked on some insurance with the pass on Cody Darrah for third. Sitting on the bubble, the No. 4 would see his night almost for not as Kerry Madsen fired into fourth with the white flag waving. Battling into turns one and two for the final spot into Saturdays big show, the battle for the lead worked off turn four with Justin Henderson taking the win. David Gravel crossed the line second with Dale Blaney rounding out the podium. Seeing his night going away, Cody Darrah put his K.K.R. No. 4 back into the show in the final two turns of the nights feature making Kerry Madsen the first driver outside the transfer in fifth. Chad Kemanah would climb from sixteenth to sixth with Terry McCarl seventh. Dustin Zomer took eighth after starting fourteenth with Steve Kinser ninth and Danny Holtgraver fading to ultimately round out the top ten. Donny Schatz served notice for Saturday night with a dominating performance in the Speed Sport World Challenge! The win was the Fargo, North Dakota drivers third World Challenge triumph, paid him $10,000 and was the fourteenth feature win in his Knoxville career. Sammy Swindell led the 20-lap feature early in the going. A tangle that eliminated top five runners Kyle Larson and Shane Stewart slowed things with two laps in the books. Swindell led Jason Johnson, Daryn Pittman, Paul McMahan and Jason Meyers back to green flag racing. Schatz advanced from eighth to third with a blazing restart before Jonathan Allard came to a stop in turn four to bring out the last caution with five laps down. Schatz shot by Johnson and set his sights on Swindell, making the winning pass to complete lap seven. He would cruise the rest of the way and won by 2.8 seconds at the checkers. "Thats an awesome racecar right there," said Schatz in Victory Lane. "These guys have worked their tails off to get the thing this good, and its the most fun car Ive ever driven. Tomorrow is a new day. Tomorrow doesnt really matter. My hats off to the guys who prepare this track. Thats not easy to do." Donny Schatz Holds on for Sixth Nationals Championship Bryan Hulbert / Bill Wright - Knoxville, Iowa (August 11, 2012) Donny Schatz served notice Friday night that he was going to be the driver to beat and for the sixth time in the past seven years, the STP No. 15 rolled into victory lane at the Goodyear Knoxville Nationals. Asked if the sixth time felt as good as the first time, Schatz exhaustingly replied, "I think it was the hardest one to win." Pausing for a moment, the six time Nationals Champion continued, "Man I burned the tires off of it. I just couldnt get myself feeling very good and I knew someone would be coming those last few laps. It was everything I could do to keep it going forward. Last night was a lot of fun, tonight was a lot harder but it feels great." Rolling off fifth, Schatz would jump to third on the start as Stevie Smith took off into the lead with Jonathan Allard setting into the runner up spot. Working the high line of the Knoxville Raceway, the top three began to motor away as the battle on the track shaped up for seventh as Kraig Kinser began to work on Joey Saldana. Holding the spot on the high side, Kinser would finally make the move a few laps later. Back to the front of the field, Schatz would begin to make his march to the front. Taking the runner up spot off the bottom of turn four on lap six, the STP No. 15 would drop Jonathan Allard to third quickly followed by the Big Game Tree Stands No. 7 of Craig Dollansky who made the pass for the show position on lap eight. Working into slower traffic at the tenth round, Stevie Smith would begin to feel the pressure form Schatz. Pulling even with Smith on the low line with thirty-nine laps to go, the "Black Bandit" would hold on to the top spot. With slower traffic looming, Schatz would seize his opportunity the following lap, pulling off the slide job on Smith exiting turn four. Less than five laps from the mid-way pit stop, Dollansky would continue to march his way back to the front of the field. Falling back to fourth after starting outside the front row, "The Crowd Pleaser" would utilize the slide job to take the runner up spot. Working into the mix after spending much of the first half riding fifth, Brian Brown would begin making strides with the pass for third on Stevie Smith just three laps prior to the mid race break. Racing amongst the back markers, the caution would finally wave as the midway break gave crews 5 min. to make any changes necessary. Back to green, Donny Schatz would quickly stretch his lead to over 2.5 seconds. Moving into the final twenty laps, Schatz would lead with Dollansky, Brown, and Meyers with Smith making up the top five. With the tail of the field approaching, the caution would bring clean track to the leaders as the No. 1k of Kyle Larson stopped with a flat on lap thirty-four. Larson would rejoin the race despite not changing a broken right rear shock. Back on the hammer, Craig Dollansky would make a bid for the lead. Diving to the berm, Dollanskys run would stall leaving the door wide open for Brian Brown. Taking a huge run to the bottom groove entering turn three, the Caseys General Store No.21 would exit turn four with the runner up spot and only thirteen laps to run. Slashing his disadvantage from 1.5 seconds to only sixth-tenths the Grain Valley, Missouri driver would bring the fans to their feet; pulling to the back bumper of the TSR No. 15 with only ten laps on the scoreboard. Slipping up slightly in turn two, Brown would see his disadvantage jump back to over 1.5 seconds as both drivers neither lost nor gain on lap nine with Schatz and Brown both slamming the cushion on the exit of turn two. Back on the heels of traffic with seven laps to run, Donny Schatz would have his hands full with Brian Brown again closing in. Working top to bottom on the Knoxville Raceway, the FVP No. 21 was back in the hunt as the leaders raced to five to go. Held up by Cody Darrah with three laps remaining, Schatz would be forced out of the groove causing the four time World of Outlaws Championship to fry the tires; allowing Brown to close within two car lengths as the green flag waved to signify the final two laps. Jumping the cushion, the chance at victory looked to be gone for Brown as Donny Schatz raced under the white flag but as Brown exited turn two for the final time the run was on for the race lead. Into the final two turns, Brown shot high as Schatz dove low. Reeling in Schatz, Brown would dive off the top for the pass at the line but as the checkered flag flew it was Donny Schatz taking his sixth Goodyear Knoxville Nationals Championship by 0.117 seconds. Taking his best finish at the Knoxville Nationals, Brian Brown crossed second with Craig Dollansky holding on the round out the podium. Charging into the top five on lap twenty-three, Kraig Kinser would climb from ninth to fourth with Jason Meyers settling for fifth. Shane Stewart would mount another impressive Knoxville charge coming from thirteenth to sixth with Stevie Smith crossing the line seventh. Lance Dewease was eighth followed by Tim Kaeding with Davey Heskin, who raced into the show from the B-Main, charging from twenty-second to round out the top ten. Knoxville locals Mark Dobmeier and Heskin were the local stars of the B main event, taking first and second. A hard battle was fought between third place, Brian Paulus, fourth place and final transfer, Jason Sides, and Sammy Swindell who missed the main event. Swindell and Steve Kinser, who finished tenth in the B main failed to make the championship event. It was the first time without either in the event since 1975. Kinser had qualified for 34 straight. Jac Haudenschild won the C main, Tyler Walker took the D main and Bill Rose claimed the E main. Dusty Zomer took a hard ride in the B main before a lap could be completed. He was uninjured. Kyle Larson, who finished 16th in the main event, was named Rookie of the Nationals. Sam Hafertepe Jr. and Rudeen Racing won "Best Appearing Car", while Bryan Sebettos crew was named "Best Dressed".
