Giles Wins One for the Home Team on Night #1 of the MyPlace Hotels Knoxville 360 Nationals presented by
Great Southern Bank! by Bill
Wright KNOXVILLE,
Iowa (August 1, 2019) – Knoxville regular Ryan Giles led wire to wire on
Dingus Lounge Qualifying Night #1 of the 29th Annual MyPlace Hotels Knoxville 360 Nationals presented by
Great Southern Bank. The Grimes, Iowa native’s ninth career win
at Knoxville and first with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series
presented by MavTV earned him
$3,000. Dusty Zomer was the high
point earner for the night heading into Saturday’s finale, followed by
Aaron Reutzel and Wayne Johnson (points below
results). Giles
early lead in the 20-lapper came ahead of Thomas Kennedy, Rob Kubli, Johnson and Trey Starks. Zomer thrust himself into the top five by lap four,
but he was overtaken by Reutzel on lap
seven. A spin by Lee Grosz eight laps in brought the first
caution. Thirteenth running Dominic Scelzi had a right rear tire explode at the same
time. Giles
led Kennedy, Kubli, Johnson and Reutzel back to green. Kubli’s restart was a rocky one as Zomer and Johnson went to the outside and inside of
him in turn two. Kubli got over the
turn three cushion, came back off of it and had
contact with Reutzel, sending him into the wall
and ending his night. Calvin Landis would spin on that restart,
negating a move from fourth to second by Reutzel. Johnson
claimed second on yet another restart, while Reutzel took third from Kennedy on lap
14. Giles was back in lapped traffic with three to go, while
Reutzel took second from
Johnson. Giles was coming for the checkers, but the caution
flew one last time for Grosz, setting up a green, white, checker
finish. Giles
was able to hold onto the win, ahead of Reutzel,
Johnson, Eliason and Kennedy. Justin Henderson, Zomer, Carson McCarl,
hard-charger Parker Price-Miller and Sam Hafertepe Jr. rounded out the top
ten. Zomer set quick time over the
42-car field, and Devon Dobie, Kennedy, Mason Daniel, Jack Dover and
Henderson won heat races, and Price-Miller claimed the B main. “I
could have done without any of them,” Giles said of the restarts in
Victory Lane. “I have to give a big shout out to my
wife. She’s six months pregnant with our baby girl, and she was
in the hospital this morning. I felt like I abandoned her and
had to work all day. She told me to go have fun, so…this one’s
for her. I definitely have to thank
Gary Isom. This is all his deal.” “The
guys did a great job,” said Reutzel. “We were really good on long
runs. I knew unless (Giles) made a big mistake, we wouldn’t be
able to get him. We got lucky there with that one caution (lap
eight restart). I don’t even know what happened on that
deal. There was one big cluster of people and I drove across
the track and I guess made contact. It was a racing
deal.” “We
had a really good racecar,” said Johnson. “It’s unfortunate
that I got by Kennedy on that restart, and the thing started blowing
up. We finished this thing on seven cylinders. I was
pretty excited just to finish. To
take third
and be pretty good in points for Saturday night…we have another fresh
bullet we can put in. Hopefully, we’ll have all eight cylinders
on Saturday.” The

McFadden Wins Thriller on Night #2 of the MyPlace
Hotels Knoxville 360 Nationals presented by Great Southern Bank!
by Bill
Wright
KNOXVILLE,
Iowa (August 2, 2019) – Four-time Australian World Series Sprintcars titlist James McFadden won a barnburner on Iowa
Corn Districts 5 and 9 Night #2 of the MyPlace Hotels
Knoxville 360 Nationals presented by Great Southern Bank on Saturday
night. McFadden, now residing in Warrnambool, Victoria, Australia,
took home $3,000 for his first career win at Knoxville, as well as with the
Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series aboard the Kasey Kahne Racing #9M. He also locked himself into
Saturday night’s main event pole position alongside Joey Saldana (complete
lineups below).
Blake
Hahn brushed the turn one wall after the green flag fell, bringing out the
caution. He would restart at the tail. Davey Heskin led the field when the green fell again, ahead of
Harli White, Brian Brown, Colby Copeland and Gio Scelzi. Scelzi moved into fourth on the second lap, followed by
McFadden.
Brown
reeled in White for second, and he and Scelzi shot by
for second and third on lap nine. The leaders were in lapped traffic
by the tenth circuit, and McFadden used the bottom to gain
fourth. The next five laps saw racing for the lead. With
five laps to go, a blanket could be thrown over Heskin, Brown and Scelzi. On the 17th lap, Brown
moved into the lead, with McFadden shooting under Scelzi on the backstretch.
Scelzi
gained momentum again heading into three and hopped the left rear of McFadden’s
car, sending him careening into the wall. He walked
away. The caution negated Brown’s pass for the lead, so Heskin led Brown, McFadden, Paul McMahan and Saldana back to
green.
A
three-car battle for the lead commenced on the restart, with McFadden battling
to the fore heading into turn three. Brown moved into the runner-up spot,
while Saldana advanced to fourth. Saldana gained third from Heskin with two to go.
Austin
McCarl, who started 14th, came on strong
late in the event, advancing as far as third, but Saldana got back by him at the
line. McFadden’s win came ahead of Brown, Saldana, Austin McCarl and Heskin. McMahan, Clint Garner, hard-charger Matt
Juhl, Copeland and Terry McCarl rounded out the top ten. Saldana set quick
time over the field, while Hahn, Josh Baughman, Garner, Kyle Bellm and Roger Crockett won heat races. Randy
Hannagan won the C main, and Scott Bogucki took the
B.
“We
stuck to the bottom there, and tried to roll it as good
as we could,” said McFadden in Victory Lane. “(Heskin) kind of missed the bottom there, and it was enough
to get by him. We’ve struggled here at Knoxville the last couple of
weeks, so it’s good to get a win. It’s a big confidence booster going
into tomorrow night. I came of the bottom
and had a big push (when he passed Gio). I
about ran into (Heskin), and I felt a
nudge. I didn’t know if it was my fault. I apologize to
Gio if it was my fault. I didn’t feel like
I could see him, so I’m not sure.”
“I
just kind of guessed wrong there on the last restart,” said Brown. “I
didn’t want to see the yellow, because I had gotten by Davey. I just
guessed wrong. I was going to go where Davey didn’t, but he blocked
enough of the bottom and kind of shut my line down there. I tried to
get around the outside, but James what he needed to do and stuck the bottom like
a champion. He’s a heck of wheelman.”
“The
driver didn’t show up until the end,” said Saldana. “The car had
really good speed. I was just making mistakes. You can’t make
mistakes. You have to be
perfect. Luckily, we had that restart at the end, and I hit the
bottom. I almost gave third away. Hopefully, I can learn
from tonight and be a little better tomorrow.”
The
$15,000 to win 29th Annual MyPlace

Saturday night, August 3! The Pro Sprints presented by Pace
Performance will also be in action. For tickets and other

James McFadden Wins
Tug-of-War with Brian Brown to Win the MyPlace Hotels
Knoxville 360 Nationals presented by Great Southern
Bank!
Evan Epperson Wins Pro Sprints Go
by Bill Wright
KNOXVILLE,
Iowa (August 3, 2019) – The 29th Annual MyPlace Hotels Knoxville 360 Nationals presented by Great
Southern Bank will go down in history as one to remember! Australia’s
James McFadden won a battle with Brian Brown that saw five lead changes to cash
in on the $15,000 top prize. His win also earned him Rookie of the
Year honors and a bonus $500 from sponsors Jetco and
Pace Performance. In support action, Evan Epperson won his second
career feature with the Pro Sprints presented by Pace Performance.
The
25-lap main event saw McFadden leading Brown, Joey Saldana, Wayne Johnson and
Aaron Reutzel early. The only caution of
the race occurred two laps in, when Scott Bogucki
performed a 360 spin and tapped the wall. He restarted at the
tail.
While
McFadden was true to the low groove early, Brown stormed the high side into the
lead on lap three. Undeterred, the Warrnambool, Victoria resident
steamed back by to the point to lead lap four. Meanwhile, Johnson
passed Saldana for the third spot.
A
great battle ensued for the lead and Brown made another charge to lead lap
seven. He changed to McFadden’s low groove, but James went up top at
that point and shot back around the #21 to lead for good on lap
eight.
The
leaders hit lapped traffic at the halfway point. Brown reeled in
McFadden at a couple of points in the late stages, but never mounted a serious
threat for the win.
McFadden’s
win came ahead of Brown, Johnson, Reutzel and
Saldana. Davey Heskin, Cory Eliason, Thomas
Kennedy, Dusty Zomer and Matt Juhl rounded out the top ten. In preliminary
action, Robbie Price won the E, and climbed to 17thin the
C. Spencer Bayston won the D main, while
Jack Dover took the C. Gio Scelzi claimed the B. A couple of scary crashes
in the B involved Clint Garner, and then Devon Dobie. Both drivers
walked away. Matt Juhl was presented $360
from Kone Korner for the Best Appearing Car of the weekend, while Trey Starks
received $100 from Pace Performance for the first non-qualifier.
“I’m
over the moon!” said McFadden in Victory Lane beside the Kasey Kahne Racing #9M. “I have to thank Mike Heffner
for loaning us the motor for the weekend. Obviously, this thing
ripped. That was a hard race. It felt like 40 laps, not
25! I’m just pumped! I was watching the big
screen. I knew (Brown) was going to run the top. The
bottom was fast…I just kept missing it a little bit, and that was enough for him
to get next to us. I decided to pound the top and it worked
out.”
“I’m
just so proud of my team,” said Brown, whose team had to leave the track and
replace their engine after not getting hot laps in. “Races are won,
and teams are made over adversity. We went 25 laps as hard as we
could go, and got beat. Hat’s off to
James. He moved when he saw me there, and he did a good
job.”
“This
car was good,” said Johnson. “I just wish we’d have started a little
closer to those guys, but halfway through the race, I felt I was picking up on
them really good. I started getting closer, and I started driving it
harder. I just started making mistakes. Once I calmed
down, it was too late. Knoxville is an awesome place.”
Matt
Johnston led the 15-lap Pro Sprints presented by Pace Performance main event
early on ahead of Matthew Stelzer and Chris Walraven. Evan Epperson moved into the top five
by lap three, and took fourth from Jeff Wilke on lap
five.
Devin
Wignall came to a stop six laps in for the only
caution of the race. Johnston led Stelzer,
Walraven, Epperson and Wilke back to
green. Brandon Worthington joined the top five on lap
eight.
At
the halfway point, Epperson caught fire, gaining third from Walraven and then jumping two more spots to lead lap
ten. Stelzer and Walraven were left to battle for the runner-up spot behind
him. Worthington also found late speed, gaining third at the white
flag lap, and then shooting by Walraven for second on
the last lap.
Epperson’s
second career win here came ahead of Worthington, Walraven, Stelzer and Chase
Young. Johnston, Russ Hall, Wignall,
Matthew Johnson and Wilke rounded out the top ten. Walraven posted quick time, while Hall and Tyler Barrick won
the heats.
“It
was a risky move,” said Epperson of his winning maneuver on lap
ten. “I thought it would work out. We bolted a new tire on
before the races, and it held together. We had a really bad start. As soon as I moved the wing
back, the car was a rocket ship. It’s been a long year and a half
since my last win, but this one’s even sweeter.”
The
$7,500 to win Bell Helmets Capitani Classic presented
by Great Southern Bank for 410 sprint cars takes to the track Sunday night,
August 4! For tickets and other information, visit www.KnoxvilleRaceway.com!
